So my spouse can have an "at-home" Thanksgiving meal.
And on another note, I am thankful that I made it through dinner yesterday without having to eat a single bite of green bean casserole, mashed canned yams with marshmallows, or canned gravy.
I don't do any of those items either. My only cheat this year was a refridgerated ready made pie crust. It's funny how families embrace "their" food as traditional and side eye other family's choices. My mother's family was big on sides- mashed rutabegas, potatoes, sweet potatoes and butternut squash; creamed onions or celery- you didn't really need teeth. My dad's family did sides like canned peas and cole slaw. My ILs are soup cooks- nearly every thing they make has a Campbells or Lipton "secret" ingredient. SIL is a little passive agressive- she'd invite us for Thanksgiving and get take out from a place like Boston Market. One year I made pizza for Thanksgiving for 31 people. We no longer make the drive out there.

LOL!
This year the host bought all the sides from the frozen food aisle at the grocery store. The kind you poke a vent hole in the cellophane and nuke for 5-6 min, then pull off the cellophane. So these identical little microwave trays of ...vegetable pudding... were set out on the table. Now THAT was a first.

Niiiice.
He'd have been shit out of luck at my place. My microwave died earlier this week. I have a new one coming soon. It would have been nice to heat the milk and butter for mashed potatoes but I muddled through. I did miss the convection feature; I made my pies the day before.
One year I'm going to do the Calvin Trillin idea of Thanksgiving.
Hey!I made a homemade sweet potato casserole (roasted the sweet potato first) pecans and little marshmellows.. that was really really good lol. I am not a food snob at all. I like really fresh well prepared food but dang it sometimes I gotta have that can of spaghetti-os during the week. So my Thanksgiving is a mix of prepared from scratch and pop open that can of jellied cranberries lol.
I am in the middle of cooking dinner right now. Guests will start arriving within the 1/2 hour. Not having some of our traditional family dishes, DD will be disappointed but she and DSIL can come over for some dinner and I'll make them then.
I have turkey and ham both going, potatoes ready to be cooked for whipped potatoes. My brother will not be happy I'm not doing "mom's" candied yams. I'm doing a sweet potato casserole that is very good. We'll have dressing/stuffing, deviled eggs (DD's request), relish tray, steamed broccoli, tossed salad with walnuts, chopped apple, dried cranberries. Rolls... I feel like I'm missing something. For 10 people, that will be plenty of food. OH fresh fruit bowl (canteloupe, watermelon, honeydew).
I have breads and cheeses to make paninis for dinner later this evening - that and leftovers. I can do turkey & noodles if we need 'em.
DD brought pumpkin pies, chocolate truffles and stuff to make eggnog.

I mean, I'm all about convenience and I rarely judge others for not making their food from scratch, but really? On Thanksgiving? You can't *at least* buy the sides premade from the deli? BLARGH.
(Also, I literally made a little gagging noise at "vegetable pudding". Hork.)

Lol at vegetable pudding.
The worst for ours was the butternut squash soup my mom just had to make. And by make, I mean dump out of the cardboard container and add nutmeg. Don't get me wrong. - I eat that for lunch at times and it's good, until you add 1/3 CUP of nutmeg like she did.

I like the canned cranberries, and I only eat the jellied kind. My mom's family who grew up on the bogs in NJ wouldn't approve, but we always did TG with my dad's mom who "just didn't have time for that."
