I just have bad luck with big races. I'm less than 48 hours from the Space Coast marathon and last night I got food poisoning? Norovirus? Something terrible. I've spent the day in bed and haven't had any solide food. Please tell me somebody else out there has been sick like this before a race and lived to tell about it. I didn't drive 9 hours to DNS.
I am so sorry! Just hydrate and rest the best you can. Are you running the full?
Your post immediately makes me think of Shalane Flanagan and how she got food poisoning several days before her 10K race at the Bejing Olympics. She still had the race of her life and won bronze. Maybe the extra rest because she was sick was helpful?
If it helps at all, my sister got a raging case of food poisoning less than 24 hours before the Chicago Marathon in...2010 maybe? 2009? I forget which. Either way, after a long phone conversation with her favorite big sister the night before (okay, so I'm her only big sister) she decided to play it by ear and since she was able to stay vomit free from about 3am race morning on she ended up running the race. It was definitely not her best time, and she definitely stopped at like four portapotties, but she did it.
So I'll tell you what I told her. Try to hydrate as much as your stomach can handle-water and electrolytes (gatorade, whatever). Tread very lightly with solid food in case whatever you eat makes you puke. And as long as you're not puking before the race...give it a shot. If you DNF, you DNF. And yes that'll suck, but you'll probably be less mad at yourself than if you don't try at all.

Oh no! Feel better! Gatorade or Nuun, crackers/pretzels with salt. Good luck. I did DNS because of a bug once, but I was still puking at the time. With 48 hours you should be okay. Just expect to be a little weak.

Thank you all. It's really frustrating, but at least at this point it's just bad nausea. And DH is being such a trooper staying here with me in the hotel all day.

Ugh. Drink up and SLEEP!
I got super sick on Sunday night [no flu symptoms but had a head cold...then spent hours puking, lost 7lbs in two days!] but aside from the headcold was doing good by Tuesday afternoon. So there is hope!
If it makes you feel better I came down with some terrible stomach thing on Tuesday evening- puking and diarrhea all night long. I was sluggish and miserable Wednesday but pretty much totally fine by Thursday morning
Ugh I hope you are feeling better and continue to improve! Before my marathon I had some sort of respiratory infection or pneumonia or something with a consistent 100+ fever which ended up lasting a couple of weeks. It sucked, but I still finished. I agree with everyone else - rest, fluid, more rest and more fluids.

Thank you guys SO much for all the well wishes! And thank you secretlyevil for checking in on me. It was really great of yall, and it did make me feel better mentally, if not physically.
I did get to run, but it was pretty painful, especially the second half, and I walked a bunch more than I planned, but I finished without puking! I finished in 3:35, which I think is a 2 min PR, even! Not too bad for not having any solid food until the night before!
