It's fine. We stopped at daycare on the way home from the hospital with dd2 at 2 days old. She also went out to target and a restaurant at 1 week old. Throw a blanket over the carrier or wear him so strangers don't try to touch him.
I have one of those carseat covers I can't wear him yet he has to be 8 lbs according to the package.
Huh? If I stayed inside with DS for two weeks nothing would have gotten done. I was picking DD up from camp when he was 4 days old and grocery shopping, having play dates, etc. that same week.
I just wore him in a carrier to discourage people touching him.

I'm happy to let DH do the grocery shopping, but we took our newborn to work on day 6 and to a restaurant on day 8. Didn't really occur to me to be concerned about it. My mom keeps telling me we aren't taking her out enough.
I asked my pedi this question, and she said that the 8lb limit is largely a liability thing to protect the carrier companies. We put DD in a k'tan before she was 8lb, and just made sure her head didn't tip forward too far and that she could easily breath.
And we took her to the grocery store at 4 days old after a pedi visit--just left her in the carseat (which Mr. Smock carried through the store) with a blanket over the top.

Ahh. Interesting.... we have a baby bjorn. DH wore one when we were babysitting our newphew for 10 days and he fell in love.. the ONLY thing he asked for in the registry. Wonder how DS would do in it. I guess we could grocery shop with his strolller since the carseat clicks to it.. then DH doesnt have to carry it.
Our pedi did recommend waiting longer to use a baby Bjorn carrier, actually. I think she suggested 2 months for that style. So you might want to double check with your pedi--and use the stroller + car seat in the meantime!
Nope. Not too soon. We were out of the house by day 3, I think. I needed to get out for a bit and my 4 year old was going crazy and driving me crazy too. We went grocery shopping, out to dinner, and for walks all within the first two weeks.

ETA: we've kept him in his car seat and stroller for the most part and no one has tried to touch him yet.
Not too early! Both my girls were at the store at less than a week old...I remember grocery shopping when DD1 was 4 days old and when dd2 was 5 days. No one ever tried to come near the girls.
