We use a combo of prefolds and pockets, but I would estimate we go through about 12 diapers a day, somedays more, rarely less. So it will depend on how often you want to do laundry. If you plan to exclusively use pockets, I think 24 at least if you want to wash EOD.
I have about 25 OS diapers in a variety of brands. I'm not sure if that's too many or too few, but my strategy was to buy a few of several kinds (I have BG 4.0s, BG Elementals, FB, RAR, WAHM fitteds, plus a few random Kawaii/itti bitti tutto/Ones and Twos I got as freebies) so we can figure out what fits our kid best, sell what doesn't work, and buy more of what does.
Also, I got zero diapers as gifts at my shower, so that's not necessarily a given.

We started with about 20 OS diapers. Thankfully, we were able to use them right away. DS fit into them almost immediately (we got some sposies as gifts and used those up first).
We bought a combo of SunBaby, Kawaii, Flip (probably my favorite), Charlie Banana and a few other samples.
I think we have 20-22 diapers. A mix of pockets, fitteds and all in ones. It was more than enough for part time CDing but I'd have more for full time (unless you want to do laundry all the time).

I have 31 OS diapers. I could probably get by with a few less, but it's nice to have that many in case I space out and forget to start the diaper laundry.

I would get at least 24, preferably 30. But really I would just get one or two of a few different brands and then wait to see what works best with your baby before you stock up.
We have a lot, 30+, but we wash every 3rd day and I like to mostly hang dry. The AIOs (about half our stash) take a long time to dry. I put them on low heat at first for a little bit because they feel too crunchy if they totally hang dry.

24 is enough, but 30 is better, especially if you will be working after LO is born. I think a bigger stash is nice if you're working because it gives you some leeway with the laundry, and you also have more diapers available to send to DC.
My entire stash is 12 FB and 2 CB - so i do laundry pretty well daily. He fit them at a little over 8lbs. We go through about 6-8/day and use 2-3 disposables at night.
If you have used both, do you prefer BumGenuis diapers, or Fuzzi Buns?
If you had asked me 3 months ago, I would have said FB. We use the perfect size (small). However, after a few months of heavy use, my FB look terrible. The PUL is delaminating on a few and the fleece is really dingy and pilly. The inserts also aren't absorbant enough anymore, even though the shells still fit DD.
I am switching over to BG 4.0 and much prefer them to FB now. The quality is much better, IMO.

I have a lot of diapers, but would want 30 so laundry was no rush. I prefer the BumGenius over FuzziBunz. The BG suede cloth is nicer than the fleece in the FB. I buy when they have buy 5, get 1 free, which they do now. I buy from Abbyslane.com
We love our Grovias. They are easy to use, fit DD really well (the covers are narrow through the crotch, so might not be good for chunkier toddlers), and they're trimmer than most of the other 2-piece systems in our stash. If the diaper is only wet, you can just change the insert and reuse the cover. The organic inserts are really soft, and stay soft even after lots of use. I haven't tried any of the stay-dry inserts, but I'm probably going to pick up a few for baby #2. We have a huge mix of diapers in our stash, but if I had to keep just one, it'd be all Grovias.
We also have one Grovia AIO, but I like our BGEs better. The Grovia isn't as absorbent and the side-snap is hard to get used to. But it is very trim and dries a lot faster than the BGEs.
I prefer BG to FB. FB seem to show wear much faster than BG, and the thinner material makes the FB feel cheaper. DH always comments about how cheap the FB feel compared to the rest of our diapers (even our Kawaiis, which actually are pretty cheap diapers).

Do the GroVia inserts actualy catch the poop though? I look at those little pads and think "no way will that handle a poo-splosion."

We don't have poop leaks, but we do have to change the cover with poopy diapers probably 90% of the time. With pre-solid poop, it was more like 100% of the time. But I've never had a poo-splosion with the Grovias!
Actually, I think the only 'splosion we ever had in cloth was a too-big WAHM-made fitted in combo with the Bumbo seat. Beware of that Bumbo...seriously, it must position them just right for pooping, and it was always an explosive one if she happened to be wearing an ill-fitting diaper, or any disposable!

BG, hands down. We hated our FuzziBuns and sold them quickly. We had 4 of the One Size Elite. They were hard to adjust with the elastics, and the rise seemed very short. The only thing I like about them is that they were more trim than our BG 4.0s.

We like BG and FB. We typically use the BG as night time diapers because you can fit a decent amount in the pocket. However we had to wait a bit to start using the BG. They would have been too large when DD was first born. I think we started using our FB when she was about two weeks old.
