I spotted this little girl and her black retriever mix friend on my run this morning. They passed our house later. She came right up to us but we couldn't get the black dog (that looked like he had a collar). Going to the vet tomorrow to get scanned for a chip and a general check up....any breed guesses? She's young but I really don't think she'll get much bigger.
If I had to guess 2 breeds, and only two breeds, I'd go with corgi x chihuahua. The ears + irish spotting/mantle + brindle + elongated body (at least it looks a little long) make me think corgi, chihuahua adds pointy noses, keeps ears up, makes for longer, delicate legs, might adjust the fur length, and can support any of the color genetics going on there.
She's very striking- are you going to give her a home if her family can't be found?
We won't keep her, but we'll find her a home--I have at least 2 people interested. She's all puppy and I just can't deal With that. Our dog is not impressed either she's obsessed with him Though.

My guess would be Australian Cattle Dog, maybe mixed with something. My dad has one of these and they are VERY high energy puppies. I dog-sat for a week and the thing about drove me crazy. Super sweet though.
Her face/snout do remind me of a Sheltie! We're going to the vet this afternoon to be scanned for a chip and a general check up...we'll see what she thinks!
That dog is definitely a brindle, and doesn't appear to show any signs of ticking, so I highly doubt cattle dog- at least not anywhere very recent in her lineage.
Ticking is not completely understood yet, but, it does appear to be dominant to non-ticking, so the offspring of a ticked dog (which all ACDs are) would be ticked to some degree.
Well, according the the vet, Miss Dottie Hinson (as she is now known) is approximately 8 months old, 16 lbs of "something.". They were even stumped too She also had hookworms, fleas, no microchip and is not fixed. We held off on the HW test...if we think we'll have her longer, we'll go back next week for that. Now we find her owner or her new home.
Update...well, we thought we found her a home. It lasted 2 weeks--she just wasn't a good apartment dog. The girl that took her did get her up-to-date on shots & confirmed she is HW negative. She found another couple that we thought would be a good match--another dog close to her age, and a yard. Well she apparently escaped the yard earlier this week and was caught by some other people in the neighborhood. Her microchip was still registered to owner #1, so she's back with her...and Owner #2 is not responding to any contact. Owner #1 is bringing her back to us and we're back to square 1.
Any advice? All the rescues around here are always full....we really can't keep her long. She's a puppy and requires time we don't have, and while our dog tolerates her, he's not pleased. I don't want to take her to a shelter. I'm worried about posting on FB and her falling into the hands of the wrong person (Memphis has a dog fighting issue). Is it terrible to ask for a rehoming fee? I didn't with owner #1 since I knew her (and then she went and had her vetted)...she still needs to be spayed (I think, need to confirm).

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time finding her a home She's so cute!
I would still try contacting local rescues even if they're full. They might be more willing to take in an adoptable puppy especially if you can foster her for a little bit, or at least they might have suggestions about how to find a safe home in your area.
What a cute dog! I'm sorry you're having difficulty rehoming. I know on Craigslist and such they recommend that you ask a fee in order to weed out people that aren't "good". But that's no guarantee. Maybe place flyers in local pet stores like petco? Or a local vet? My vet is really good with that type of thing (the office has a FB) and I adopted my 2 kittens (now cats) from her.
Thanks all! Our vet has posted her and I've reached out to a rescue who always has a lot of small dogs (vs the pittie/bully rescues I follow on FB). I'll also send an email out to my coworkers on Monday.
Ugh...so, someone has posted on one of the FB pages that she is posted as missing on another page and has been "for a while". When we first got her, we tried to find original owners to no avail...she was also dirty, had worms & fleas, no collar/chip. Is it terrible that, if this is true, I don't want to give her back??
Well, she's a pup- we always wait to chip pets who aren't already desexed until they're under for that. Our almost 9mo pups still aren't chipped because they still aren't neutered, not because we're lazy or bad pet owners, it's generally accepted that dogs benefit from being neutered closer to the end of their growth period, and our big guys aren't slowing down much yet. Collars fall off, dirt can happen in 30 seconds (LOL- especially with white dogs), fleas are likely part of her journey. If you can verify that someone has been looking for her, it's only right to investigate that.
I "lost" a dog once- my dad accidentally let him out when he came to let in a repair guy- he forgot to close our gate, and whoosh- he was off. Straight to a swampy, woodsy, undeveloped area. I walked the neighborhood for hours and finally found him- but, he was a mess. In just hours. And while he was chipped, he wasn't collared, since he was kept in an enclosed baby gated kitchen, and collars are a choking hazard in that situation.

Aww. Well, like cmeon said, the fleas and dirt could have happened when she escaped. If she came from a shitty situation though, I wouldn't want to give her back either. Have you gotten any more info?
I do agree that good rescues will be happy to list her if you mention that you can foster (or perhaps sponsor her), assuming the "original owner" doesn't pan out, is truly awful (I support not handing her over to really terrible people, but, you have to try to be unbiased , or something along those lines. It is so tough to place a dog in a good home one your own- you really want to get some expert help to make the next home stick.
Well, the girl that posted that never provided any follow up. I'm working with my vet right now--2 people Have emailed about her. I've also exchanged emails with a local rescue--even if they can't sponsor her, maybe they can help with posting. Also found I can get her spayed for $50 at a nearby vet with a voucher from the humane society. Will look into that this week. She's done pretty well the last 2 days---I see a big difference vs the first time we had her. Like she "gets" What being in a house is like. And no accidents in the house since Friday!

If she's been posted as missing, I think you need to do all you can to contact the original owner. For all you know she was loved and cared for desperately and slipped her collar or something...my cattle dog had a fat neck and a tiny head, and she could always back right out of her collar if she really wanted to.
@kjewell we ended up putting her with a rescue here. They've had her two months and have decided to transfer her to one of their partner rescues in the NE. Hopefully this will Help her find a home! They confirmed she is deaf and she is learning hand signals. I just loved her, but our dog did not.
