How early is too early for a congrats card/gift?

My BFF and his wife (whom I also love) are expecting their first. She's 5.5 weeks along. She's only told a few people.

I want to send them all of the baby things, but h thinks we need to wait till she's out of her first tri.

Is it jinxing it if I send them a card and a small gift now? When did people start sending you things?

She has an appt on Monday, but doesn't have her first real doc appt till Dec 23.

If it was me I would probably want something after the first tri. I don't think it's jinxing it I just think it depends on the people. If they are the types that will start spreading the news sooner than later then I say send them something sooner. But if they are more the type where they are going to keep the news to themselves until further along, then I would wait.

Or maybe send a card with a dinner gift card or something and then a baby related later?

I think sending a card and a small gift (basket of morning sickness friendly goodies?) is appropriate and sweet, but I agree that you should hold of on sending anything for the baby until she is further along.

Darn, I was hoping I could send things now. Maybe I'll wait until after her first official appt and send a card then.
