It's so confusing to me that the hair obsession started because of pressure to look more "white". White people are the one's that can't see the difference AT ALL.
And also, white people are the ones totally fascinated by and admiring of intricate hairstyles that are specific to black hair.
Black hair culture is fascinating to me. When I hear black women discussing their hair its like they're speaking a whole new language. lol. I need to watch that documentary.

This is really an oversimplification of the issue.
Look I think it is ridiculous that Gabby is being criticized, especially since the half pulled through ponytail was done in the same manner as the rest of the team. But the whole, the black community is perpetuating the issue and white people no longer care about the presenation of our hair, is pretty naive.
She is so beautiful. I cannot believe people are such assholes. Can you imagine being so proud you just won a GOLD MEDAL and reading about some controversy where people are shitting all over your hair? Ugh. Like a punch in the gut.
Also, I am white but have kinky curly hair. I straightened it yesterday and we had 100% humidity. I wish I had taken a picture to show you what happened. I looked like an effing poodle with a halo. Bad scene. Working out has the same effect on me. I'd be a total mess at the olympics.

I'm not trying to imply that I know anything about this. At all. Really. The only thing I'm qualified to say on the issue is what I said, and it's purely based on my own reactions to the hair of black women and those of my white friends and family. We think its freaking cool, and its a total mystery to us.

Sorry, if I seem cranky. We talk a lot about this on PCE and some of the articles discussed about the treatment of people (especially kids) due to their hair is pretty upsetting. I will go finish my coffee now. : ).

No, I couldn't even imagine how pissed I would be that this was what people were focusing on.
No matter how much gel, hairspray, and clips you put into my hair it was always still a mess by the end of any gymnastics meet I competed in. My hair is still an unruly mess in general.
This goes to show how much importance people place on vanity. This young girl just made history being the first African American to win the all around womens title. She is the fourth american to ever do so. She is 16. God damn it when will people learn to be proud of our achievements instead of embarrassed by appearances. I would love to see half of those commenters from twitter try their hand at uneven bars, or smash their face from missing a landing on the beam.
But she didn't even look bad! How else would anyone do their hair to compete in an event that requires your hair be out of your face? The other US competitors had the same flip pony tail. And I think the Russian girls looked ridiculous with their hair flopping around. This truly befuddles me. I am the first to snipe at people for not living up to their beauty obligations - Jessica Simpson- but (1) Gabby didn't look bad at all, she looked perfectly appropriate; and (2) she is one of the best athletes in the world, it's not her job to have styled hair. FFS, this makes me mad.
And I honestly thought to myself the other night that she had the best hair out of the team. She's gorgeous.
This. I thought she looked much more put together than all of the other girls on the team. One in particular has hair sticking out of her part way pony most of the time and it looks terrible. Gabby looks great!

I looked really hard and saw nothing amiss with her hair. So I don't get the article. Whoever wrote this needs to dig a little deeper to meet her word limit next time.
