On the one hand, we have plenty of hand-me-down newborn and 0-3 size onesies that would work just fine.
On the other hand, I am squeeing over Baby Gap and kinda sorta just want to pick out ONE semi-special outfit. And it WOULD only be $20 or so, and I'd get something fairly practical like a cute sleeper or romper.
Yes! I hardly bought any clothes, but I wanted that one thing to be something I picked out. It totally wasn't practical (pants, onesie, jacket, socks, hat), but it was adorable and I have like 1000 pictures of DD in it. The tiny little NB jacket came in handy the first few weeks, too.
I didn't specifically buy it myself, but I did have a designated 'coming home' outfit for DS. My mom had gifted us a really cute Ralph Lauren kimono top and pants set: I thought it fit the bill and in retrospect, I'm glad it was special and something I liked b/c I kept it in his memory box.
So, I can validate buying something special if you don't already have an outfit you like.
No, we just picked something out of the many cute outfits that people bought us. DH had his heart set on a Red Sox onesie, but it alas it was too big and we ended up with something else. Newborn was the only thing that fit for the first few weeks.
One thing I do wish we had was a cute knit hat to put on them. Looking back, the generic hospital hat is kind of ugly and I wish we had something different.

If it's something you want, then definitely do it. Especialy if it's only $20 and if the baby could maybe wear it again.
We didn't do it. It just wasn't important to me. And then it worked out for the best b/c it was August and a million degrees out when I had them, and the nurses encouraged us to bring them home in just the snap t-shirts and diapers (and hats) to avoid them overheating in the back seat of the car.

We did too. But it was only a sleeper and a hat. I wanted to be able to pick out the "first". Other than the coming home outfit I didn't have to buy clothes for while.

See, weather is also a concern for me. I don't know WTF to dress this kid in. If he comes closer to 38w, it'll probably still be incredibly hot here...but if I go past due, it might be cooler.
my FIL has DH's framed hanging in his office at home. It is kinda cute.
That's really sweet. DD's outfit is identical to DS's (just in pink) and it's one of the baby items that I've seriously considered framing/shadowboxing, but I know it's going to get the from DH. Hrmph.
No. It wasn't important to us. The drive from hospital to house was 2 minutes and the animals were the only ones waiting at home. At the time I also had an unknown raging infection, 2 collapsed lungs, pneumonia, and PE. I was in absolutely no condition to care what my baby was wearing.
I didn't, but I got tooonnnnsss of clothes as gifts, and just picked the outfit I loved most. It was February and the outfit was cute and Pink with a red sparkly heart. I will keep it forever.
That's a really cute outfit but I honestly would find it a pain to put on a newborn and then put in the carseat. But I'm still not a fan of 2 pieces because of all the diaper changes.

Oh, do it! When I first stepped into FIL's office when DH and I were dating I almost teared up. He has had it framed in a shadow box for 30 years! It is so precious.
Just don't hang it in the living room or where it is in your guests face, cause that would be obnoxious. Lol.
Brie, I would probably go for a light, long sleeved sleeper of some sort and then pick out your favorite baby blanked to bring along in case you have him later and it cools down a bit.

Eh, our outfit was very similar. I was actually very glad that it was two pieces b/c he wound up being very long and I don't think it would've fit it had been a one piece. That said, he wore it for the car ride home and that was about it.

Lol @ the living room: one of the things that has kept me from doing it so far is that the only place I can think to put it is probably in our bedroom, which would increase the DH eye-rolling. But the story of you tearing up may have pushed me over the edge...that's so sweet.
That said, I've jokingly said that if I go through with framing things, etc., that I'm probably saddling my poor future daughter in law (or SO, whatever) with the task figuring out what to do with this stuff b/c DS is NOT going to care, lol! But I don't necessarily expect the kids to have the same attachment to all of this stuff that I do. But I love it.
I say do it! You only bring him home once, may as well indulge in the moment. Looking back, I even wish I had brought hospital outfits - the thought had never even occurred to me until we were there and I saw other babies in cute little outfits. Of course DS was fine in his hospital gear while we were there, but I do love to dress up a baby!
We just brought a sleeper. Except DS was itty bitty and the NB sleeper size totally overwhelmed him. Any special outfit would have been a waste for a good 6 weeks or so after he was born.
yes, but we didn't acutally wear it. she had a halo (baby ankle bracelet) and her pants had feeties attached to it so we couldn't wear it...so she wore just a onesie. we got a side-eye from the nurse that didn't know the story.
We did, kind of. We got a ton of clothes as gifts, but we didn't really get any newborn-sized clothes. We bought a few newborn sleepers a few weeks before my due date, and we used our favorite as her coming home outfit. We brought our favorite 0-3 gift outfit to the hospital just in case she was too big for newborn stuff.
If you want it, go for it. The one you linked to is cute!
We did--he came home on the day the Pats were playing so it was important to DH that he wear a pats outfit It was huge on him but he looked so freakin cute!

Yep, both times. I then set aside the outfit so that one day when I get my act together I can get photos framed of each boy in a shadowbox with their respective outfit.
ETA - one was a Baby Gap onesie, another was a Carters set that had sentimental value. Nothing extravagant.
