Validated. We did the same, cute Gap sleeper thing.
One thing my friends did that was hilarious was to cram baby into the coming home outfit at 6 months (or somewhere in between coming home and then) and do a side-by-side photo. Our coming home outfit had feet so we couldn't do that. But, I digress.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
If it's something you want, then definitely do it. Especialy if it's only $20 and if the baby could maybe wear it again.
We didn't do it. It just wasn't important to me. And then it worked out for the best b/c it was August and a million degrees out when I had them, and the nurses encouraged us to bring them home in just the snap t-shirts and diapers (and hats) to avoid them overheating in the back seat of the car.
See, weather is also a concern for me. I don't know WTF to dress this kid in. If he comes closer to 38w, it'll probably still be incredibly hot here...but if I go past due, it might be cooler.
And my aunt knitted a cute blue hat that would go with it, too.
I like those! The Gap Favorites are nice and soft. I would probably see if they offer it with short sleeves, though, since it's not clear if it would be really warm still. If it's cooler you can just put a blanket on him.
And since it's two pieces, you could do the funny picture I mentioned in my other response. ;D

I *loved* our coming home outfit. We had just moved to a farm, and the onesie my parents got me said "Farm Friends" and had an adorable pig and duck sewn onto it. It was Newborn size. DS was 9 lbz 3 oz and was way.too.big for all his newborn size clothes. Boo!
I had a boy and girl 0-3 month outfit packed and a neutral onesie and cute pants I'd gotten used on ebay. He ended up in the neutral outfit because the others were too big.

Hmm. You know, after reading the replies I remember that another reason we bought them coming home outfits was that we didn't have any NB stuff, either. I have GD and my mom was convinced the baby would be big. I bought the NB under 7lb stuff from Gap and was so glad I did. It was the only thing that fit for the first month. He was very short so we got a lot of wear out of it.
No, we just used a cute nb outfit that my mom had bought for us b/c it was cute and it was already in the closet. However, god knows I bought this kid plenty of clothes just because I liked the item and I knew I'd love seeing him in it, so I say get the coming home outfit!
(Also, I had always heard to bring a nb and 3m outfit to the hospital just in case the child was larger or smaller than anticipated. In our case, he probably could have used a preemie outfit, but oh well. Just something to keep in mind while you're packing your hospital bag.)
I bought a little set from carter that had duck feet. Both kids wore it home. My mom bought them outfits as well, but I wanted them to wear the one I bought.blighted?
We don't really have any NB stuff at all because everyone is convinced this is going to be a big baby. We have maybe 6-12 hand-me-down onesies. And I think all of the cute stuff we've been gifted was mostly 3-6 or 6-9 month size.
I'll raid the closet when I get home...if there's nothing cute, I'm totally buying something.

I would have at least a couple nb things on hand just in case. J was a peanut, but 3m stuff was way too big for him until like 8w. I'd get it from a local store, keep the tags on and you can always return it if your little man is immediately in the 3m stuff.
For my son I bought a onesie with his name on it on Etsy. I bought something similar for this baby, also on Etsy. This is the one I bought, but in black and red. www.etsy.com/transaction/87948538

I got something for both of them. It wasn't anything really extravagent, but I wanted something sweet to bring them home in. I have both outfits saved in their keepsake boxes. I'm glad I bought them. I think $20 is worth it.
ETA: They each just had a sleeper. I didn't want to mess with any complicated outfits or worry about pants rubbing on the cord stump.

I did not buy a special outfit for either one, but I did take a couple of cute outfits they'd been given to pick from at the hospital. I think if it's important to you, then you should definitely go for it.

Yeah, we have enough NB stuff to get us through a few days until we can make a Target run if it's necessary, it's just not particularly cute, ha.

We did not, but I also wasn't packed and ready to go either(I thought I had 3 plus weeks to go, and am a procrastinator). I threw a few SU onesies in the bag and he wore one of them home. The pics I have of him in the car don't even show the onesie, because he had a blanket on him;)
If you have been MM about other baby stuff, which it sounds like you definitely have, a $20+ coming home outfit is totally reasonable. If it would make you happy, get it!!

We just brought a sleeper. Except DS was itty bitty and the NB sleeper size totally overwhelmed him. Any special outfit would have been a waste for a good 6 weeks or so after he was born.
We had a similar experience. I think I brought a few different options to the hospital, but I had not bought anything specifically for coming home. In the end she was so tiny that we put her in the smallest thing we brought, which was a white t-shirt.
