We decided we'd like to go in the next few weeks, but planning it is turning out to be pretty difficult because it's such a large area. Any suggestions on where to stay? We'd love a cabin or cottage on a lake, or a B&B.
thank you! Lake George was actually at the bottom of my list (after Lake Placid and Lake Champlain) but for no other reason than its location. I just found a great website though, with lots of info.

H had a short term assignment (3 months) about ten minutes south of Lake George, so we lived there for one summer and it was awesome. During that time we also visited Lake Placid and Lake Champlain; Lake Placid is a cuter town than Lake George, so it depends on what you like to do. Lake George has some great hiking and 4x4 trails (um, if you happen to be driving there in a big a$$ truck I guess?) so we had fun hiking and driving our Jeep around there. The town of Lake George is kind of honky tonk, IMO, so for "town" activities, Lake Placid is much better.
I second Lake George! My family spent a few weeks there every summer growing up, and after a 15 year hiatus I went back with my husband last summer and still loved it. The lake is beautiful, and there are tons of lodging options and plenty to do. The town is not amazing, but it's ok to walk around in the evenings after dinner. There is the Village of Lake George and also Bolton Landing. One of my favorite traditions is a ride on the Minne-ha-ha with the Lake George Steamboat Company - you get a little overview of the lake. The area has great history, outdoor activities (parasailing, horseback riding, hiking - we did a great 6 mile hike - Buck Mountain). Depending on how long you go for, Saratoga Springs is a reasonable daytrip, or Fort Ticonderoga if you're interested in American history.

Good call on Saratoga Springs. It is a super cute town to visit.
If you can afford to stay at The Sagamore on Lake George I bet that would be awesome. I've had dinner there, but never stayed.
It might be fun to rent a boat for a day there if you are confident with boating. There are some fun "hangout areas" like Paradise Cove (I haven't tied up a boat there since I was a teenager, so I can't say if it seems less cool as an adult).
Another good hike there is Tongue Mountain (http://www.adirondack.net/business/tongue-mountain-11208/)

A Saratoga Springs gal here! It is an amazing town, and Lake George is great too. There are also decent outlets at LG as well as an amusement park. There are tons of places to hike in the area as well. The Sagamore is popular, but I haven't stayed there. It can be pricey. There are some cute B&B's in Warrensburg, which is one town north of LG. Good luck!

DH and I went to Lake George for our anniversary at the end of June. I have to be honest, I wasn't impressed. The lake is gorgeous but I thought the town was a cheesy tourist trap.
I liked Bolton Landing better, which is a few miles north and where The Sagamore is located. If you can afford to stay there I would recommend it. We had a couple of drinks on the porch and it was awesome. We definitely want to go back and stay there some day.
