Packers are coming to our house on Monday. (Yay for spending Christmas in the Navy Lodge, btw... ) I have a newborn and H is getting screwed over with his work schedule-so I'm trying to do all of the move prep while the baby sleeps. Remind me of all the little things that will make things easier with the movers? I feel like my list is missing stuff.
Luckily I did most of the purging and organizing while I was pregnant, so it's just the last minute things that need done. I think.

Pictures and decorations down from the walls. All trash cans cleared out. Isolate anything you don't want them to take. Check for anything liquid or combustible that you don't want them to take or that they might refuse. Take pictures or video tape your stuff. Write down serial numbers. If you plan to take furniture hardware with you, disassemble the furniture and bag up the little parts.
Try to get all of the things you know you'll want on the first night and have them packed in ONE BOX -- coffee maker and a few mugs, your cordless phone, one set of linens and pillows, maybe a pot, pan, and a few plates/silverware (like if you have a picnic set, or even paper/plastic).
Have some food/drinks on hand for the movers. Usually water and soda is fine, coffee if they are coming in the morning. I usually order a pizza or a party sub for when they are there (also for me and H), with some paper plates and solo cups.

Round up all or your remote controls and chargers to put in one bag in a box that is labeled accordingly.
Sensitive paperwork that you plan to hand carry should be put in your safe place.
And remember to take care of yourself. Do all that you can, but at the end of the day, things will get taken care of. I'm sorry that your DH is getting screwed with his schedule.
FWIW, our HHG were picked up the three days before Thanksgiving. Because we are OCONUS, we are still in our house, but living with loaner furniture and the essentials only. We do have a Christmas tree, though. It's 220 volt so we aren't taking it home with us. I just realized yesterday that we don't have stocking to stuff.
