No, again. Not dangerous to white people. The "danger" you speak of in the bolded part, negatively affects minorities. It is dangerous to minorities. White people are still on the upper, safe, non-threatening side of it all.
If racism is going to have the gap closed, white people need to wake up, educate themselves on racism, and get over the discomfort of being called racist (or even the assumption that people might think that). Chances are, you've done some racist shit. Intentional or not. It is systematic and ingrained into people. See Chris Rock's comments on white people needing to progress more, because black people are and have been dealing with this for centuries.
I was saying it is dangerous. Period. We can't and won't progress if we all sit around categorizing people by color and what we think of that said color. This isn't the case but say every other race believed whole heartedly that every white person out there was born and bread to hate all other races and we would never accept them. How in the world would progress ever be made?
In the past I have probably done something racist. Does that make me a racist person? No. Do I think any races is above or below another? Absolutely not. To me we were all made by the same creator and are the same. We are people. I hope it changes for the better.
Oh, so we should just white-wash all minorities? Awesome idea.
People on this board will lose their minds over tax brackets and e funds but act brand new about chopsticks and race only being a problem because people make it one.
FIX IT, JESUS.
But to be fair, it's not the same people doing both. I have been posting on this board for years and neither of the posters you're referencing here are people whose names I even recognize. Speaking of stereotyping, let's not assume that a few people are representative of what this board actually consists of.

You don't recognize M? I find that very hard to believe. I surely recognize her and I'm pretty sure I'm here less than you.
So if the owner of this restaurant had chosen to use something like a Mariachi band outside to encourage custom, instead of someone dressed in what amounts to little more than a caricature of a Mexican person, I think people in this thread would feel differently. It isn't that a cultural representation is racist, it's that a caricature of a particular culture is.
Did M wake up, take a look at her foolishness, and then crawl back into bed? Because we're still waiting on an explanation of what she really meant, right?
Sorry for taking so long. H is out of town so I have do his job too.
I didn't read all the comments but just coming to explain what I mean and I don't usually participate in these kinds of threads so I won't be coming back in because really, there's no point in arguing. That said:
I think of a racist as someone acting in such a way that blatantly tries to hurt another or someone who believes that a particular race is superior to another. Vs example? doesn't scream trying to hurt/make fun/discriminate/etc the culture. This is stereotyping rather than someone being a racist...whether it is right or wrong or offensive to people does not make him or whoever put him in that outfit a racist, just ignorant.
So when I say people cause racism (or whatever my worse were that got you all up in arms), I mean it happens in two ways. Those who violently and intentionally say/do racial things to hurt others is an obvious cause. Based on the info given, I doubt this guy is trying to say he is superior or trying to hurt anyone by dressing up. Then you have those who screams racist at someone who doesn't mean any harm and the issue of racism continues. It doesn't help the real issue of those who are truly racist. Sure people do and say ignorant things about race but that doesn't make them a racist and people shouldn't be so quick to call racist.
I don't think stereotyping makes a person a racist, so I'm not going to call people racist just because they say/do ignorant things. If I see someone wearing something that isn't (or even if it is) a part of their culture, I might side eye them but that's all.

You would do well to learn that that is not ALL that racism encompasses.

I think the comments you didn't read clearly spell out why this is all wrong.

Burning crosses and racial slurs are not the limits of racism. I posted this earlier: All the horrible overt racism of our history didn't vanish with the Civil Rights Act. It went silent and covert and thus continues in silent idsidiousness. Because it is hidden now in the system and in a million little microaggressions, it has the added benefit of people getting to say "I don't use the N word. I am therefore not racist" even as they enjoy a legacy of privilege and vehemently deny having any such privilege, and portraying anyone who dares suggest they do indeed benefit from a racist system as merely "playing the race card."
Also, stereotypes are racist. "Black people are criminals. Jewish people are rich and stingy. Native Americans are drunk. Mexican people wear sombreros." These are all stereotypes. They are also all racist statements.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you anything about M or what she's said or done in the past. It's possible some people I don't directly interact with just aren't on my radar, but I don't think M is representative of this board since she's not (presumably since I don't know anything about her) a long time, major contributor to this board. Is she a MM reg or someone who freaks out about efunds and tax brackets? I could be wrong.

without touching on other parts of this foolery...
People are quick to call out racism not calling people racist. I think that is a huge barrier of translation in trying to have these conversations as well. People are so quick to think that they're being called the dishonorable title of being "A racist" that they are fighting to prove that they aren't. The issue is still racist and articulated with racism, whether or not the person themselves is a racist.
Also getting to side eye someone due to their racism is a privilege. Black people and others have to fear for their lives, job security, homes, and basic civil rights due to these 'minor' things.
I think this is a really good point and kind of a light bulb for me, actually. I think that's exactly the distinction I was having trouble making earlier.

You must have amnesia. I'm not here half as much as you are and know she is one of the MM major contributor
I mean are you guys thinking I'm lying? I am sorry I don't know anything about her?
Apparently I need to hang around less if everyone thinks I'm here so much more than them lol.
Honestly I have my signatures and avatars turned off, so unless someone has a memorable name or we actually interact I do have trouble remembering them. 1 letter names are not likely to stick for me.

Here's a really good video about talking about race. One of the things I like most is the idea that it shouldn't be "you are a racist" but more like "hey, you've got some racism stuck in your teeth," "aw man, again? let me get some floss."
This is mainly for you, @buckybells, because it relates to what you were talking about and it seems like you genuinely want to learn more about this subject.

I have no idea who m is either. I don't pay much attention to people I don't interact much with or "like".
I mix people and back stories up all the time. I don't even recognize half the names around here anymore.
