I think it's more a function of how the room is decorated.
If you have gone down a very traditional road, it can sometimes look they you're still looking/saving up for just the right piece. But if you have a more casual or eclectic decor, it looks as if you're putting the focus son the beauty of the floor. When we were younger, and my mom was in her MCM-mode, she used inexpensive sisal rugs in the LR and dining area. She'd hose them down in the yard and leave them to dry if needed. Then she'd throw them away when they got gross because they're cheap.
My mother inherited a beautiful Persian rug back in 1968 that he sister still has because my mom didn't want to deal with caring for it. She has a canvas floor mat in her kitchen that she stenciled and hoses off in the yard now.
We have this now, mostly because I can't decide on what to use for the rug. It's definitely not ideal but not horrible. You can see my rug indecision too! LOL

We don't have rugs on our hardwood right now, and I think it looks totally fine. That being said, I would love a a huge good quality rug, but that is way more $$ than I want to spend. So unless I find something super timeless, or super affordable. we'll probably remain rugless.
We have hardwood with an area rug in the LR, but we didn't for several years. While area rugs can define a space, I think it is really a matter of personal preference.
