The big nanny agency charges $12/hr if you are under contract with them. They cover all the payroll taxes so its a flat fee. Generally, for my MCOL area, I think $10-15/hr is reasonable, but don't forget that you owe taxes on top of that. I think care.com is a good option, do you also have a local baby store? Or a cloth diaper store? Ours have bulletin boards where people can post and I've seen some very tempting offers.
Requirements that I would want: passes basic background check child/infant CPR/first aid references car and willingness to drive my kids cell phone discipline/punishment style similar to mine
I didn't find this nanny there, but I found a prior one on Sitter City. She worked out, but I interviewed lots of strange people before I found her. I pay (Philadelphia) $120 per day for 8 hours. 2 kids.
. Good lord. If you'll drive her here, I'll watch her for that
In NoVa the going rate is $12-$15 per hour. In your case, I would make sure you are clear about the summers off or part time schedule in the summer. That will be a no-go for most really good nannies. They need the steady income, understandably so.
