Can MH wear this shirt or not?

I don't know much about guy's fashion and MH knows even less than I do (sadly). His mom gave him this button down blue and whited checked shirt for his birthday. Is this in style? We weren't sure what we thought. Can he wear this in public and look nice or is it not very cool?
