This. I have one, and have added people I've worked with in the past, both co-workers and former customers. They can provide recommendations on your work performance (like a letter of reference), and you can do the same for them.

Pretty much this, but you can also see how you're connected to other people. So if you look up your potential boss and she's a second level connection, you can ask your shared connection for a reference.

I'm a passive LinkedIn user but I do think its cool to see who the people you know or work with also are connected to. It would be very useful if you were looking for work intros etc. But yeah, professional facebook bout sums it up
I really like LinkedIn. I attend a lot of events and seminars put on by our local chamber, and usually when I get back from those events I'll have several invitations to connect with people I met there, so it's really good for networking and establishing contacts.
