I'm late to the party with this one, just started watching season one. So far I'm enjoying it - there's suspense, drama, action, Ian Somerhalder . I find some of the dialogue a bit unrealistically introspective for teenagers, but all in all, I'm hooked for now. Anyone else watching? Does it stay just as fast-paced in later seasons?
So now I'm in the middle of season 2. I really liked the introduction of Alaric as a "strong" human character who can hold his own against the vampires. There's so much excitement/action in every episode, almost too much - when do they ever get a break?? I also like Caroline a lot more now as a vampire. She's much more confident and independent. While it lasted, I also enjoyed her friendship with Tyler.
I like Stefan's character but don't really like Paul Wesley much. He seems to over-act at times. Damon I find a lot more subtle and quite funny. The thing about Damon, though - they keep going back and forth with him. First he's evil, then he's good, then he's evil again...it's a touch tiresome.
In the last episode I watched, Klaus makes his first appearance in his actual body (after possessing Alaric for a while). Very suspenseful! I wish they had told aunt Jenna sooner what was going on. She was out of the loop for so long and now it's a huge shock to her.
Now I'm a few episodes into season 5. I have to say, it has become really convoluted and weird. I actually enjoyed the whole Original family thing. Klaus was quite fascinating, especially when he'd say something profound out of the blue. I might have to start watching the Originals.
Amara, Silas, and Ketsia are all dead now, and Bonnie is back from the dead but now the anchor to the other side. I find this to be some bullshit right here - the recycling of characters and resurrecting of the dead. Similarly, the back-and-forth of Stefan and his humanity switch gets old. At this point I'm solidly rooting for Damon and Elena to end up together. Tyler just broke up with Caroline in order to pursue and kill Klaus, which seems slightly foolhardy given that Klaus' death would also result in Tyler's. But, Tyler never did have a lot of foresight. For now I'm glad he's out of the picture. I'm also glad that Matt is a stronger character these days. He's no longer just a pawn.
The last thing I saw was Damon getting thrown into a cell, where apparently they conduct experiments on vampires. I'm like nope nope nope with this shit - I'm really not interested in watching him get tortured. I think they're really starting to run out of story ideas and searching hard to conjure a new villain now that Silas is gone.
I will keep watching because I'm invested, and my goal is to finish season 5 before Game of Thrones returns on April 12 . My favorite seasons were 1-3. I felt like the show could have ended with Elena becoming a vampire.

I'm warning you now, you're not going to be happy with some of the future seasons. This is a recurring theme of the show. (And I agree with you)

Yeah, it's definitely getting weird. In the last episode I watched, Marcos arrived and Tyler has a Traveler inhabiting his body.
Nina Dobrev just announced that she's leaving the show after this season. They should just cancel the series and give it a logical conclusion now.
I just finished watching season 5. I'm losing interest and don't know if I'll watch season 6 when it's on dvd or not. I know that Damon somehow comes back from the other side. It's starting to become a bit tiresome at this point.

I completely agree. Season 6 is on my DVR but I haven't watched it yet and I'm not super excited about it yet.
I'm also not happy that Elena is leaving after this season and they're planning to continue the show without her. That just seems silly to me since the show has been about her and the Salvator's from the beginning. They should just write a great ending to season 6 and be done.
Season 5 is the worst. I haven't watched tonight's episode yet but as a whole so far this season has been much better than the crap show that was season 5. I'm not thrilled Elena is leaving but they really haven't known what to do with her for a while so maybe it won't even be that big of a deal, lol. I'm hoping since they knew she was leaving ahead of time that they at least do a proper send off.
As long as Ian Somerhalder is on there I will still watch
