I just did a lookup on Wikipedia for the main city and it had the population total within city limits, total rural and total metro area. Although the $12K for my suburb was based on the 2000 census and I have a feeling that is very outdated and we've probably got more now since there are several new neighborhoods going up around us.
Where I work (4th largest city in the US) - 2.1 million people in the city, 6.3 million for the entire metro area (including suburbs)
I do not miss Houston.
There's just over 86k where I live (though I think it feels smaller than that), and almost 150k in the city where I work, and where my brother lives.
It's got it's good and bad things regarding the size. That 6 million is spread so far around that at least we aren't living on top of eachother, lol. I mean, it could take someone the same time to drive from the Woodlands to Clear Lake and be in the same "metro city" as it would to cross 3-4 different states in the Northeast!
BUT, with a massive population like we have, it's rather disappointing they haven't come up with a better method of public transportation and the stupid light-rail only caters to those living in the city (when it's obvious there are MANY more that live outside in the 'burbs who could use some better options).

Lol, the 6 million is spread out but even that 2.1 mil... I moved there from an island that had maaaaybe 10k people on it, and 30 miles of road. Houston was a shock! Plus I was right in the middle of it all (Galleria area, worked in River Oaks). I cannot lie though, the food there is like nowhere else. I would give a kidney for the variety of food!
ETA: it really is a bummer that they haven't implemented a better public transportation system because that would make a load of difference. The lack of that and the ridiculous traffic was stressful.
