The game has some strong RPG elements story-wise so letting yourself get drawn into the world will definitely make the game more enjoyable.

For combat you have both real time and tactical options. The first game doesn't allow you to respec your talents/skills so be careful with your choices.

Oooo have fun. Origins is fairly linear but the story is very enjoyable. I would suggest being a Mage but that's just my preference.
