I am currently TTC (cycle 5) and would like to start a workout DVD program because lately I have kind of let myself go, but I've had two early losses and am terrified of doing anything that could cause another. I realize this is probably totally irrational. What are the guidelines, if any, for working out while TTC and pregnant? I haven't started the DVD yet so I'm not sure how intense it's going to be.
You can work out as usual while TTC and pregnant. My OB always said that you can do the same exercises while pregnant if you were pretty active before you got pregnant. So, if you start working out now and get pregnant in a month or whatever, you are ok. Besides, your body will tell you when you need to slow down. My morning sickness was so bad I couldn't jog down the street without wanting to throw up. When it finally subsided at 20wks, I was just too lazy to go back to my old work out routine. lol.
I think you're fine to start while TTC. Once you're pregnant, your body really will tell you what you can and can't do, and as long as you use common sense, you will be fine. At this point in my pregnancy, even, the only things I don't do are sit-ups and things where the risk of falling/getting hit by a heavy flying object is high. I'm still running (albeit slowly), lifting heavy weights, doing wall handstands and all kinds of other stuff. A good workout DVD program should show modifications for easier movements for beginners--start with those and work your way up if you feel comfortable.
FWIW, I also had two losses, so I understand the fear. But, I try to remind myself that it's a million times healthier for me and the baby to exercise and be healthy than it is for me to lay on the couch. I took a few weeks off in first tri because I was too nauseous to exercise, but got right back in it and have been doing CrossFit (which is pretty intense) regularly since. I am really hoping that the strength and endurance I've built will eventually help during L&D.
