Wish I had the answer, mine does the same when she's overtired. She goes from cute and sweet giving kisses to crazy pinching and grabbing glasses in a matter of minutes. We just reinforce no hitting and do nice with gentle gentle. Of course we also know now to put her to sleep after she gets kissy...
Don't know how it'll work for an 11 mo, but I just started "crying" when my 22 mo hits me. It gets her upset and she'll immediately try to make me feel better. I think its working so far, but its only been two days. Its definitely getting the point across that hitting hurts.
We usually try to reinforce appropriate ways to use hands. Like saying "hands are for clapping, eating, and playing" in a calm voice. We found that if we grabbed his hands at that age, it just made him want to do it more.
Edited for pronoun use as my child is not an it. Oops.
Around that age DS started biting me. I would not say anything but just immediately walk a few steps away or set him down on the floor if I was holding him. He stopped but I don't know if my method worked or it was just a phase.

Good question! DS2 does the same thing. He's almost 13 months now, but it started about a month ago. When he smacks me in the face, I instinctively say "Ow!" And now when he hits me he says, "Ow!" while he does it. Ugh!

We went through that phase. We bought DD a book called "Hands are Not for Hitting" and if she hit, we would tell her that hands are not for hitting and that hitting makes us sad. At first, she thought hitting was funny, but eventually learned that it never resulted in anything fun.

DS started around the same time , we say "nice nice" and rub his arm. Now when he does it (and he still sites at 18 months) he stops and rubs instead if hit. Now he hits and say "no no" right after, because he knows its wrong lol! Im stumped on what to do next!
