Would they do better in pairs? Is two too many for someone who has never owned one before? Does anyone have any advice for a first time guinea pig owner?
The cage will probably be about 2.5 feet by 5 feet, but DH is thinking about making a bigger 2 story cage.
Long shot, but I tried Petfinder.com and couldn't find any listings for central Ohio. Does anyone know of a rescue that might have guinea pigs near central or eastern Ohio?

Thanks! I figured I would call around tomorrow. I sent a few emails to some rescue organizations, so hopefully someone will be able to steer me in the right direction.

My S.O. had two guinea pigs. He had two females. He said they're hard to spay/neuter and two males would fight, so if you're going to have two, it should be two females.
Yes definitely neuter if you have males. Pigos do better in pairs, but not so great in a two story situation. They have little legs and have a difficult time climbing inclines. Your cage length sounds fine. When I had some, I would let them roam around for a while on the floor and they loved it. They also loved to be in my lap and petted. Also they love eating card board boxes, which is great for their teeth. I used to cut them a "house" out of cardboard and keep it in there so they could hide and when they chewed a good portion of it up, I would replace it.
Supplementing their food with veggies and romaine lettuce will help them too. Also, they need vitamin C tablets in their water.
