DS 's first birthday is tomorrow and we are more then enough toys from Christmas. The grands are all giving money. Could you do money? Or offer to buy his first/next pair of shoes? Also, we are ready to buy an umbrella stroller now. That would be a great gift if they need one.

DS turns 1 in 3 weeks. And yep, we have more than enough from Christmas! Strangely though, all of the Christmas gifts were toys, so clothes would be great. Shoes too.
I love the water table idea. It's going to be weird not having a birthday mid-year (Growing up DH and I always got summer stuff for our birthdays in May/June). So anything for summer is useful. After a year of having tons of stuff from baby showers, we don't really have much for year 2!
When O and his friends turned 1, I got them all the Parum Drum. O absolutely loved his, and I liked that it was cute and compact. ShaysMomma can weigh in on how annoying of a gift a drum is for a 1 year old.
I bought this for DD on her first bday. I put away the drum sticks, but she LOOOOVES all the other instruments. And the drum makes good toy storage!
I was going to get this for another little boy on his 1st birthday, but I knew they'd be overrun with toys and just gave them cash instead. And a pair of Hanna Anderson pj's because I wanted to give *something* and I doubt she'd buy them herself.
Someone gave DD a lamb rocker from Costco. That's fun sometimes and it's something I would've never bought. My husband calls it the "lamb pony."
My cousin's daughter turned one on January 1, and my mom and I got her a water table for use this summer. She just got a ton of toys for Christmas, and they were pretty excited about having the water table for use this spring and summer.
My kids have January/February birthdays so I totally agree with summer stuff that they can put away and bring out later. It sucks having Christmas and their birthdays so close so when my friends did this I was elated.

No way - that was a great gift! Loved how the drum itself is the storage for the other pieces of the band. He is really into playing with it still @punky!
I have two winter boys, so I agree with the summer stuff as presents.
Or, money. Especially at 1 years old, they don't have a clue about birthdays/presents and the parents will probably appreciate not having more toys in the house right after Christmas.
Toys for the summer for outside. Golf clubs, Soccer ball and net, toy wheel barrel, basketball. Both of my kids are winter babies and we never got any outdoor toys for summer.
