I have a Targus one from 2005 that still looks fine. I believe they now make one that is checkpoint friendly so you don't need to completely remove the laptop from the bag.
When I was in grad school I used a laptop sleeve, that way I could carry it around in different bags securely (and when you go through security you can leave it in the sleeve).
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
I have a Swiss Gear one that my company gave me that is great...I use it for my carry on on my personal trips as well as business trips. They have them at Staples and I think they are between $70-$80. I've used it a ton and it still pretty much looks brand new. It has a nice padded section for the laptop that snaps closed. I think it is the Swiss Gear Synergy Computer Backpack.
I just bought the ebag weekender motherload (I think that is the name). It is amazing and has a special laptop compartment. I am able to get DD and myself packed for a month to Europe in it! I'm in love!

I have an Overhaul 40 from The North Face, and love it. It's comfortable and pretty big, but still fits under the seat in front of me on the airplane. I use it weekly for work travel, and I plan to use it for my upcoming 6 week trip to South America.

I have a North Face Borealis backpack that fits my 15" laptop. The pocket doubles as a holder for a hydration system so it's not as padded as a backpack specifically designed for a laptop, but I've never had any issues with that.
