I mostly lurk on this board but have an upcoming trip I need fashion help with. I have never been to California and have absolutely no idea what clothes to pack! I will be doing 5 days in the wine country and then a weekend in San Francisco. It will be in Sept so from what I've read I think it will still be warm in Napa but cool in San Francisco.
I have no idea what to do with this but thinking shorts and a cute top with this blazer if it cools off.
This top with a flowy, white linen skirt:
Then for San Francisco I know we are doing the Alcatraz night tour and assuming I will be pretty cold on a boat in the evening so I was thinking I should pick an outfit to go with this leather jacket:
Other than that I have no clue what to pack for the city. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA
I'd assume that it's going to be pretty chilly in both places. Layers are essential. FWIW, we were in San Francisco and Carmel last week, and needed sweaters at various points throughout each day. I'd plan on cardigans over those dresses and tanks if you need them and long pants instead of shorts.
I am always amazed at the temp/weather differences between SF and Napa. When we were there recently, it was a difference of 30ยบ between SF and our first winery.
I didn't get too dressy for Napa but we weren't going anywhere super fancy.
Forget chilly, it gets downright cold in SF. It can vary depending on which area/elevation you are in. Bring layers like you mean it. Bring at least one warm sweater and a versatile scarf to pair with your jacket.
Comfortable flats or boots are essential IMO if you are walking anywhere in the hills.
I work in SF. I have worn a coat every single day this year to work. It is cold in SF year round. Napa will probably be warm in Sept. Bring a jacket and pants for SF.

Thanks for the help! We are eating at Boulevard in SF one night, how dressy do people get for dinners? Will dressy jeans and nice top for both H and I be dressed up enough?
Yes that's fine, I went with black skinny jeans and a blazer. I saw everything from LBD's to regular denim, it was a mixed bag. Kind of like NYC... Do you have any other places in mind to eat while your there? We did Gary Danko and it was delish!
sept is the best time of year to go to the bay area. you will love it! it should be warm in napa, but definitely bring layers to wear for when you are in the city. the weather could be warm or it could be really cold/windy - you never know with SF!

We will be eating at Boulevard Fri night.
We need somewhere to eat Sat night but are doing the Alcatraz night tour so it will probably be about 9:30 before we can get to dinner. My favorite cuisine is Mexican ~ do you have any recommendations for a good mexican or spanish restaurant?
Hi there, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I actually don't have a rec for mexican. But the places we did go to were: The House in North Beach The Slanted Door in the ferry building Tartine in the Mission
and others that were rec'd to me but we didn't get to were: Farallon Sons & Daughters Sushi Bistro Tony's Pizza Napoletana
I think your choices look fine. We were in Napa this January, when they had unseasonably warm weather. I just mixed and matched skinny jeans, flats, l/s shirts, cardigan/blazer and scarf everywhere and felt totally appropriate.
