Has anyone applied for a civilian position in there? I applied for one at our next duty station and I'm curious as to how fast it updates. Will it update if I'm rejected? How soon does it take to reject if it doesn't pick up enough key words in the resume? I'm being neurotic because I really really want this job, meet all the requirements, and almost all the preferred qualities.
I've never applied but I've been on the hiring end. We had well over 100 applicants for each of the two jobs I've been involved with. We picked the top 6 (all were extremely qualified, retired O-6s with all the requirements and experience) and interviewed them. Then we offered it to the top choice. He turned it down because we wouldn't pay for relocation expenses and we went to the next applicant, who accepted it. I am almost positive we never told the other 120 people that they weren't selected for an interview. From what I understand, the GS system is really, really hard to break into w/o veterans preference. There are companies out there that will help you tailor your application to get a job, I don't know how effective they are though.
Thanks, ohyouknow! This is considerably less skilled than what you hired for, I'm assuming! I appreciate the feedback! Eta: this is for a job with CYSS. I'm an independent contractor for them already, so I know the system. I also have spouse preference, but I don't think that means much at all really.
I applied to one of the VA's as a respiratory therapist a few years back through USAjobs. I don't recall ever getting any updates on my application. I hope you get this job though

They should send you an email letting you know when you have been sent to the selecting committee or not. This committee will then select who gets an interview. If you are selected from an interview you will be notified after that.
They won't start looking at apps till the job closes. Then it could take months for the selecting committee or interview committee to make referrals it can be a long process.
They didn't use to update you on the process, but they improved things a few years back and now it is all automated.
ETA: Just realized this was the Military board (though it was ML!). Sorry to intrude, but I am a fed employee if you have any questions lol.

Thank you, thats helpful! I know it's a long process, which is why I applied now. (We move in a few months). The job closed last week, so I'm hoping to at least hear a yes or no about my resume before we leave.
When I applied for internal agency jobs, I get notified after it closes if I am referred or not. I did apply for one of the announcements that stays open for months and haven't heard anything. Having been on the other side, I think it is really hard to get a job from the outside without knowing how the agency reviews the package. For examples, KSAs may be stated as being optional, but you likely won't get an interview without them in my agency. Knowing how they review the package and interview can boast your chances of success. I hate the process.
I usually receive e-mail updates with the status. For the GS job I received an offer on, it was actually updated to "hired" before I even received a phone call. I was called for an interview about a week after applying for that job, and then received a tentative job offer about 2 weeks after that. My security clearance had expired and for whatever reason I was denied an interim clearance so I had to wait six months for my clearance to go through before they gave me a start date.
My situation was complicated after that and the process was frustrating to say the least.
