My sister started sleeping on the top when she was about 6. The only time any of us fell off is when we slept two up there, and the one on the outside would fall (usually me). They sell them with half or full length rails on them now to make them safer.

My oldest was just under 5 when we got bunk beds. I intended to only have the oldest up there, but her sister started sleeping with her anyway. She was 3. The bed I chose had a very good rail all the way around so nobody has fallen out while sleeping, even with both up there.
We did have an incident when my younger daughter was 3.5 and decided to mimic Rapunzel climbing out of the tower off of it and fell, but she was fine.
Shit, now I feel bad. We just got bunk beds, and he's been sleeping on the top for like a week now. He's three in a month-ish.
LOL. Don't worry about it. If it works it's fine. Every kid is totally different. I'm sure my DD would be fine in one too, I'm the one with a thing about it. And I know there's 4363464363 things I kid approved hat the rest of this place would be all, "WHAAAATTT!?!" LOL.

My friends have had their daughter on one at like 2.5, but the bottom bed is Queen sized. they have a unique situation in which they all share a room though.
Just chiming in to say that making a bunk bed (as in, putting the sheets and blankets on it), is the most annoying thing on the planet. It makes me want to throw SS' bed out the window.
That said, I think he was around 5 or so when he slept on the top. He rarely sleeps there though and prefers the bottom (no sibling using the other bed).
We're going to wait until the younger child is 5 at least, even though he'll be in the bottom bunk. Because, yeah, I can just imagine how this story's going to go in a few years based on its current path lol. We have the bunk beds already, luckily each bed can be set up as a regular twin.

Eh, I think kids can probably start changing their own sheets around 5-6 years old, right? Just make them do it. It's easier for them because they're smaller.

Technically yes, I'm sure this is true. And I do make SS make his own bed, and I have to make peace with the fact that it's not done as neatly as I would do it (because I'm ridiculous). I just remember hating the bunk beds my sister and I had as a kid too, probably for the same reason. I couldn't get it neat enough! lol

This is what we are planning on doing as well. My 4 year old and 2 year old share a room with the de-bunked twin beds and we probably won't bunk them up until the younger one is closer to 5.
The room is so cramped right now, but I'd also don't want to risk the younger one being crazy on the top or on the ladder anytime soon.

Lol. To be fair I've never lived with bunk beds, just had them at camp, etc - they always seemed pretty cool. But I also don't care about neatly made beds... Anyway, I can't remember hold old your SS is, I was thinking more generally.
We have bunk beds. They came with a warning that children under the age of 6 should not sleep on the top bunk.
I think the real answer is it depends on the kids. We got them when DS1 was 4.5 (top bunk) and DS2 was 2.5. DS1 is a total rule follower and NOT at all a dare devil. I felt 100% ok with it. DS2 was not, and is still not allowed to even GO in the top bunk, nevermind sleep in it. He's clumsy, often careless, and much less fearful than DS1. I think it will still be a few years before DS2 has access to the top bunk.
dd1 is in a loft bed at 3.5. It went a lot more smoothly than I ever imagined. I think she sleeps better than before because the bed is more cozy with the rails all the way around.
eta: of all the rules she loves to break, getting out of bed is not one of them. in the year she's been out of a crib, she's never once done it. she calls for me when she needs help. i feel comfortable with her up there.
