Oh we skip a lot of words in those books. We have a North Pole South Pole one. And one about reptiles. I read 1-2 sentences out of 10. But my kid doesn't notice. She is 3.
We have "On Beyond Bugs", a solar system one, and a map one. DS1 just turned 4 & loves them. I enjoy them more than the ones with all the made up words! Those just have DS making up his own words all day (which makes me crazy!)
Yes, the vocabulary is advanced, but I kind of like that. They usually introduce a big, new word and then define it using age appropriate words. DS loves the big words & tries to use them later. They're a fun challenge for him.
DH took something called "there's a map in my lap" out of the library for my *2* yo. Pretty sure she doesn't need to know what a cartographer is or the intricacies of a topographical map.
But she loves it and can now point to nj, ct, ma, and ny and tell us what relatives live where (twy sentra?). Of course, I'm pretty sure she's identifying them by color and that this skill will not be transferable to any other map
I feel like I learn new things every day. Probably crap I used to know, but have since forgotten. This week, I learned that almonds aren't actually nuts. They're seeds.
L has a book 'why is soap slippery?' I couldn't have told you that. Once I read it, it rang a bell- but I am glad I wasn't asked before we read the book. Also where does water go after you flush ?( knew that one) and how different animals get clean. (Interesting)

I actually like those books a lot! We've only read a few: reptiles, ice, and insects. A bunch of it goes over her head, but I figure exposure is good. I tend to just read the text and not the little speech bubbles and extra info on the margin of the page.
