Latest news is that he's an Army vet. Some of the other boards are talking about it not getting as much attention as Aurora. I agree. Shouldn't we be as horrified by a shooting at a church/temple as we are a shooting at a movie theater?
You know I thought it was just me being out of the loop and not seeing much TV to get the full coverage but you're right...it was barely a headline on the Today Show this morning.
The whole thing is awful. It makes me sick to think that someone has that much hate for a group of strangers that they would go out and do this.
It would be nice to have more coverage, but there was a huge issue with victims of the Movie Theater Massacre being extremely disrespected by the media, and there was a backlash against the press. And perhaps, the church is trying to keep everything as private as possible, for the victims families or their religious beliefs. Obviously, I don't know the full reasons, but those are my theories.
I do really wish it was getting more media attention because it's so heartbreaking, but...and I can't believe I'm going to type this... I can see why the Aurora shooting got more coverage.
The Aurora shooting was random and without real motive, right? There wasn't a real reason he picked that theater or those people. I think that's why it blew up so much more than these crimes. Everyone can see and worry about an Aurora-like event happening to them, whereas the hate crimes... not so much.
Plus, although not usually such a mass shooting, hate crimes seem to be happening with more frequency. There was the woman in Nebraska that was bound and mutilated, and the teen couple shot in Texas, just to name two. The Aurora shooting was shocking partly because it wasn't like anything else that has happened, at least recently.
And then there's the whole business aspect of it all. The "this could happen to me" aspect of Aurora would mean more clicks on news webpages, ratings, etc.

They're brown and in a minority religion. It's not going to get the same play as Aurora. Call me cynical. It's like if a blond haired blue eyed girl goes missing, it's all the media can talk about. We never hear of it happening to anyone else.
Such an awful thing. I will never understand how a person can have that much hate.
I agree that it isn't getting covered enough. I think it's a false sense of security for people to think "Nobody would do that at my church/place of worship." But everyone goes to the movies, so it hits them closer to home.
Then again, maybe brandinee has the right theory (media giving the families space). I hope that's the real reason.
The cover of Time last week was about how servicemembers are committing suicide at an alarming rate. I don't know what the answer is, but we have to find something. There are so many resources available throw the DOD and Tricare. It's a shame they don't get used more.
