My co-worker's wife had a terrible accident and is in ICU. He's at the hospital with her. He's looking for people to help with his dogs while she's in the hospital and I want to offer to take one of his dogs in to help out. He has 3 and I have no idea the size or breed. My only concern is my brand new hardwood floors. Would a dog wreck the floors?
I think it would depend on the dog and size of the dog.
For instance, my dog is 25 pounds and hasn't made a scratch on the floors. We play indoor fetch with her daily down a long un-rugged hallway and the floors have been fine.
Also, forgot to mention it probably depends on the color of your floors too. We have a blonde honey color, but I imagine if you had a dark finish on your floors it would show every tiny mark.

How big are the dogs? I have honey oak floors, and they don't show marks. On the other hand, my in-laws have very dark wood floors, and every little scratch shows. My dog and BIL's dogs can and do scratch the floors. We avoid having my dog run in their house (not always easy) and try to keep her nails trimmed short. If you're really concerned about this, is it possible to gate off the areas with the new floors? Or buy some really cheap rugs?
ETA: My dog is 80 pounds, and the other dogs are also 50+ pounds.

Pretty much the whole first floor is hardwood. Upstairs we have a carpeted family room but I have a brand new sectional up there. I really have no idea the size of the dogs I just know he has 3 and I wanted to help out with one. I guess it's probably not a great idea.
Can you go stay at his house? It would be the easiest way to take care of all three, and I'm sure it would be helpful to have someone at the house to keep an eye on things.

Unfortunately that's not really an option as he lives pretty far from me. I'm a single mom so it would be hard to get my son to school in the AM

I understand- if there's someone in his life that could do that, though, it would really would be the easiest way to handle things. If you already agreed to take a dog, though- it's possible that the dogs won't be a problem to your floors. That has a lot to do with the size of the dogs and their ages and activity levels. Is baby gating the kitchen or a mud/laundry room an option, if you pick the dog up and he's a cousin to my 85lb puppies (who do play way too hard for wood floors)?

I haven't offered yet. And almost every room in the house has hardwood except upstairs and I have a brand new sectional up there. So I'm going to try to find another way to help

It also depends on the dogs nail length. I have a very large dog but I trim his nails bi weekly so they don't touch the floor, thus would be a non issue. I used to be a groomer though and it's something I'm kind of obsessive about. Most people don't maintain their dogs nails that way, but some do.
