They are helpful even in non-humid climates. It's usually always muggy in basements. When living at home we had one that was connected to a hose that ran into the drain in the basement. My Mom liked it that way because she didn't have to worry about emptying the tank. However, you have to have a drain and comfortable that it can keep up with the flow. (I know ppl that run a hose to the nearest shower or bathtub).
When I was in college I had one but didn't attach a hose. It would automatically shut off when the tank was full of water to empty. It worked well when my roommates and I remembered to check the tank.

I've used them overseas. It came with H's room in Korea, and it was definitely necessary all summer. We'd empty buckets a day. Same when I visited Okinawa. It definitely made an impact. However, I've lived in plenty of muggy places and never bothered.
It wouldn't work here since I have the windows open all day and night, 365 days a year.
My parents use one in the basement and empty it about once a day. The basement will get really musty and gross if it's not running. They're also in a 'treat water like gold' drought right now (Midwest) and the dehumidifier is the only reason my mom's potted plants are still alive. That thing has made a big impact all around.
