I am not an expert but I think some dairy and honey are two things you can do on paleo that W30 restricts. I have seen some paleo recipes with each that wouldn't fly on w30.
Question for you wambam...what is the difference between just a plain old paleo diet and Whole30? I've heard Whole30 described as "really strict paleo" but what kinds of things are allowed on paleo that aren't on Whole30?
Disclaimer: there isn't a super precise definition of paleo. In general, it's generally accepted as "Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat." However, I think most paleo people would agree that it's so very individual depending on your goals.
For me, personally - I think some items that are not included on W30 but could be considered "paleo" are: grassfed butter, natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup, paleo treats, etc.
I think if you're going to follow a paleo-ish lifestyle long-term, you just have to experiment with what works for you personally. For me, that means I eat orthodox paleo + butter + white rice and potatoes + GF treats on occasion.
I think most people who do Paleo subscribe to the 80/20 rule longterm, whereas Whole 30 seems to be more strict? There's also the Primal contingent that includes things like heavy cream or occasional cheese/wine.
Wambam.... curious how often you have wine or other obviously "bad" things or if you have a strategy to set limits but still allow for treats.

In general, I usually only have treats/wine/etc. when I am not cooking at home. So if I eat out (maybe 1-2x per month) or if I'm at a party (maybe 1x per month - I'm sort of antisocial lol), then I will have alcohol or a GF treat. Sometimes my H brings home corn chips or whatever and I may have some of those.
However, if I have a specific goal in mind (i.e. this summer when I was trying to lean out), I may be very strict for periods of time.

I think part of my post-plan plan is to keep cooking on my own as w30 or paleo as best I can but not go crazy at out or at events as much. It has been very eye opening to see what I was eating even though I thought I was doing fairly ok.
Keeping stuff out of the house has been really key. We can't eat a frozen pizza if we don't have one.
I've developed a serious love for almond butter, but it's damn expensive. I might bring back PB (natural).
PB isn't "paleo" techinically, but I really don't think it's the worst thing in the world. I would test it out to make sure you don't have any ill effects from it. And I would probably recommend not making it a primary protein source, but I just can't get it up against PB.
