H and I live in Chicago and we're looking for an affordable anniversary trip. We've never really done Milwaukee but we both love beer so it seems fun. Is there anything special that happens in October that we should try to schedule around? I'm pretty much obsessed with Fall.
OnMilwaukee.com has an event calendar, so that might be helpful. Most of the major fests are in the summer and I haven't lived in Milwaukee for quite some time, so I can't remember anything in particular off the top of my head.
H and I liked the Lakefront Brewery tour. I did the Miller tour more times than I can remember in college...it's free, so you'll see tons of newly 21 year olds.
Make sure you check out the 3rd Ward and Water Street. The Public Market is fun.
As for hotels, I like the location of the Intercontinental. It's super close to Water Street, so you'll find lots of restaurants and bars. The Pfister is also one of those classic Milwaukee hotels.
I loved the Sprecher tour. We did a day trip up on Megabus a few years ago and did Sprecher, the Lakefront tour, the Public Market, and the Historic Third Ward.

H and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary in Milwaukee because money was tight (we also live in Chicago). We stayed at The Iron Horse Hotel and absolutely LOVED it. Everything about the hotel was awesome. www.theironhorsehotel.com/
We visited the Harley Museum, Public Market, Art Museum and did the Lakefront Brewery Tour. We enjoyed all of that. Cafe Benelux had a great breakfast. www.cafebenelux.com/
We walked the third ward and that was cute but didnt take very long. Definitely skip The Shops of Grand Ave, they were gross.
There's a huge beer fest this weekend; just something to keep in mind for future visits. eta: Sorry, had my "M's" WI cities mixed up! Madison has the Great Taste fest this wknd: www.mhtg.org/pages/599
I agree with all of what PP said. Sprecher, Miller and Lakefront are all fun/decent tours to go on (Miller is more on decent side). 3rd Ward is fun to walk around (I recommend Wicked Hop and Water Buffalo for dining). The Eastside is also qwerky and fun (love Beans and Barley restaurant). I'm not sure when their season ends, but you may be able to get a brewery boat tour with Riverwalk: www.riverwalkboats.com/default.html
If you're driving, along the way on 94 there's the apple orchard, Apple Holler. It's always full of families; but it's fun. Agreed on pp and Grand Ave mall; it's terrible.
eta: oh and my fav italian is Calderone Club; on Old World 3rd St and Kilbourn; cute, quaint and delicious

Cafe Benelux had really good bloody marys if you like them ~ and they served them even at 8am!
Cafe Benelux has a great dinner menu too. I'm drooling thinking about it. They also have an awesome rooftop terrace. I like eating at Water Street Brewery too when I'm up there.
Third ward is a lovely place to check out cute shops and restaurants. Public market can be a great quick lunch spot.
Are you taking a car? The Milwaukee domes are pretty neat. I'm sure a bus goes there too. I haven't been on any brewery tours. But I've heard good things from my mom.
I was going to suggest Jazz in the Park. But the summer season ends Sept 6.
