We just started looking at carpet this weekend and the types we liked ranged from $2 to $4 a sq ft. Installation was "free" but they add on a lot of costs for moving furniture, removing the old carpet, stairs, and upgraded padding. I'm interested in the replies as well..
Prices vary so much depending on the quality. Do you have luna or empire in your area? Have them both come out for a free quote and then wait. Luna offered us a steeper discount later on (a week later or so) when we didn't schedule service right away. 4 bedrooms a hallway and stairs was about 3k for me

I got carpet installed over the summer--it was a local company that did it, but the pricing was through Costco. They were BY FAR the best quote for the price. However, I don't know the brand--it was about $4.00 a square foot, including everything but tax. (Furniture removal and replacement, padding, install, etc) I would guess that this would also be appropriate for a hallway and/or for bedrooms. This was our sunroom, where we do the vast majority of our living when at home.

I used carpet one to install carpet on the stairs in our old house. I have used them 5 or 6 times over the years. They have are locally owned franchises. I have used 3 different franchises and was very satisfied with their work, pricing, and selection.
another vote for Mohawk smart strand. go to youtube and search smart strand zoo challenge and watch the video. it is what convinced us to buy, and we are so happy with it (we've had it for about 18 months)
