I'm in charge of a cross-department group project for my company. (I still have no clue WHY...but it's all good ) We had a deadline Friday, the 23rd, for everyone to turn in their first draft.
Every single person on the team (EVERYONE) sent me an email either Friday or today complaining of team members for the specific sections not being able to meet....experiencing technical issues....etc.
I decided to send out an email explaining that "due to various correspondence and technical issues (including a few of my own), we will be extending the deadline to Jan. 30th."
OK move? (I mean, EVERY single person waited untit the last minute and had issues. While most of my stuff was done, Microsoft even shut down on me Friday while I was putting in finishing touches (i.e. page numbers) and IT had to fix my Microsoft Office.

Clearly you should have asked us what to do BEFORE you did it
As long as it doesn't affect your overall goals/deadline it sounds fine. What else can you do, you know?
But, I also worry about people taking advantage of you and continuing to not do their work. Come Jan 30, are they going to have more excuses? I would definitely be firm moving forward.
I say okay But then again, my coworkers and I make "executive decisions" to drag our feet on completing tasks so that it's not just one person late, it's all of us. That makes us sound like slackers, but I swear we come through when it's a critical item!

Basically, we are part of a large orientation rehaul. There are 6-7 different projects going on simultaneously for the same intiative. They've not given us any deadlines. These were self-imposed because I didn't want OUR team to get caught with our pants down once we do hear of a deadline. So the overall leader isn't giving us anything to go off of.
They are slacking to be honest because I don't think they were ever really sold on the idea. It is what it is. Now, Friday...I do have to put the smackdown.

Yeah that's hard if they're not really motivated to work on it. Boo.
