Okay, people I respect who are lovers of literature said this book is crap. So I am tempted never to read it. Or watch the movie. But I want to know about this big ending everyone is talking about.
Should I A) just read the damn book; or B) just go on Wiki or whatever and read the entire plot because reading the book/watching the movie is a waste of my time?

I thought the book was well-written, actually. Very suspenseful. So many of my friends had already read it and hated the ending, so at least I was prepared.

Well, it's not literature, really, so... Do you like fiction and suspense? I think it's a good read. Though I will say that I literally hated every character. I've never torn through a book while hating everyone like I did with this one. So, I say read the book and consider it a pop culture thing or whatever.

They didn't, but I feel like the movie left out enough small details that if you didn't read the book, you might not fully "get" what happened. My BF turned to look at me and said, "But....How did THAT happen?" (I'm trying not to spoil anything, here. They didn't phrase it exactly that way.) The girl on the other side of me asked her husband the same question.

You should NOT read this book. You should have someone here spoil it. Wiki might even be too much exertion for this.

Yes. The book isn't crap. The ending is just infuriating.

I am probably not the most cultured person but I did enjoy the book, I would give it a shot.
Well, the last book I read was Isla and the Happily Ever After, YA lit (it's so good, I've read all of her books). So it's not like I'm only reading National Book Award winners. LOL.
The people I knew said they just thought it lagged and stuff and then bam the ending was contrived.

Totally agree. It's has some good twists and turns. But I'll say this- some of it was just a bit TOO unbelieveable that I got frustrated by it (his fingerprints on all that stuff?). That aspect annoyed me.
I didn't know there was peen to see! What scene was this in?!
You have to watch the entire movie for peen. It's at the very end when he gets in the shower with her. A side shot that nonetheless makes it clear that Mr. Affleck is generously endowed.

This is THE most accurate summary of this book yet.
Me: "Let's order Gone Girl to watch tonight. I hate-read it in a day last year."
I mean, I get why she ended it that way.. But still.
I get what you're saying. Maybe I'm weird, but I sometimes feel like when endings are wrapped up neatly and everything's resolved in the end, I wind up more disappointed than when they're left a little open, if that makes sense. Not always, but I think it worked well with this story. I know I'm probably in the minority, though.

The ending wasn't what everyone wanted, but it's truly the only "right" way for it to end. Not sure if I feel that way because I was guessing the ending correctly ahead of time, so I wasn't as shocked as most people seem to have been.
So it's not a satisfying ending in a traditional sense, but I still maintain that it ends the only way it could, if that makes sense.

And neither of them are traditional, well-liked characters, so it makes sense. I disliked the ending, but it was at least consistent?

Right. Reprehensible people treating each other terribly. Summed up here (crass language used, not spoiler-y).
She didn't even really want kids.. the kid was just a manipulation tool.. That kid is going to grow up so fucked up with sociopath Amy as a mother and awful man Nick as a dad. I mean, if this was real life. Can only imagine how resentful he'll be for the next 18 years and how Amy will fuck with that kid's head to keep him in line.
Yep. And Grandma and Grandpa right by her side to screw it up further. I feel like they got off easy in the movie vs the book.
I loved the book. It's not world class literature or anything, but it's suspenseful and kept my interest.
I didn't like the ending, but I think it was the only way to end it. There weren't going to be any happy endings for Amy and Nick, nor did they deserve one.

I found it to be a great story. Not literature, but fun.
