What shoes do you all use for lifting? I'm going to give it another go and would like to get things right this time around. I've heard Converse are perfectly fine if you don't want to drop a ton of money in the beginning. Please tell me it really is as simple as a trip to Target. I want to believe.

I know a lot of people who lift in Converse. I wear a pair of Merrell Pace Gloves, and husband wears NB Minimus.
ETA: I wear Converse a lot in regular life, and I like the Merrells better because I feel like I can better feel/grip the floor with my feet. I don't know if that makes sense or if it's all in my head

you will be fine with a pair of chucks. you want something flat that will give you good balance. you dont want anything like a running shoe that will allow you to tip forward or backward.

Agreed! I had to wear my running shoes for lifting last week and I felt like I was off-balance the entire time.
I have worn minimalist styles of New Balance and Nike. I just ordered a pair of Reeboks to try b/c the new style of Nikes I ordered didn't feel quite right.

When you say "get things right," what exactly are you thinking? Are you wanting to do Olympic lifts as a separate exercise, or is this mainly incorporating some more weights as part of your overall fitness? I ask because as others have said, you can certainly start in whatever flat shoes (I have a pair of Merrells with the Vibram barefoot bottoms that I used to wear), but if you're focused on Oly lifts then it may make sense to buy an entry-level lifter like the Adidas Powerlift (under $100) upfront rather than buying Chucks now and finding you need/want true lifters in only a couple months.
