This is a friend of MIL. Everyday she puts something up talking about anti-Obama, pro-life, how gay marriage is wrong, blah blah.
This is just an excerpt of her rant today about how everyone should be more American:
"Oh I'll go really out of bounds! Are you African or are you American? Pick one!! I'm white are you black?? I'm not saying African American anymore, NOPE! I'm not German American. I'm American <3" +o(

She sounds like an angry person. My advice to her would be to choose her battles more carefully and spend a greater portion of time enjoying life and trying to identify the good things in the world.
I decided to keep her on FB after our last argument because I didn't want to have to explain to MIL. But I think with this post, I won't have to explain anything when I defriend her.
well I think African American is generally WASPy PC term. I very rarely have heard Black people call themselves that.
(Before someone takes this the wrong way and starts shit storming, I should add - no offense to any people who are reading this that choose to self-identify as African American, I am relaying this message based on my personal experiences, blah blah blah)
I'm kind of witty beans. I always thought AA was the PC term, but my world history teacher in HS took and entire 90 minute class period once to explain why that's not really the case. She is black, and self identifies as such because her ancestors are from the islands, not Africa, thought you'd never be able to distinguish that by looking at her. Basically it boiled down to "ask before you label".

beans, I think it's a generational thing. Our generation is more likely to use black, but people a few decades older will generally prefer AA. Kind of like how our generation may use queer, but people who came of age in the 70s generally abhor that label.

But yah, that lady is crazy cakes.
isn't that really what life boils down to in general?

I think I would just hide people like that from my FB feed. Some of my friends post some pretty bad anti-Obama, pro-grun, anti-gay stuff and I do my best to ignore it...but sometimes it's best just to hide their comments or block them from your feed.
FWIW, I'm stationed in the UK, and I find myself saying "African American" accidentally when most "black" people here are neither African nor American (they are British citizens largely of Caribbean descent). And "black" is a perfectly acceptable term here. Yet I still have trouble saying it, because I've been conditioned to say "African American." Just a different perspective...
