so my shih tzu has been having some major poo issues lately, so I decided to switch up his food. He was on science diet, and I thought I'd try blue buffalo basics for small breeds. When we were at the vet yesterday, (getting some laxatives ) I mentioned it to her and she basically told me that 90% of the time she sees small breeds with diarrhea issues, they've just switched to bb because it has so much protein and bb is designed for 'working' dogs. Did I just ruin our lives? Lol. Tell me what to feed him. He is very high energy and we actually do walk a lot and play hard.

Check out dogfoodanalysis.com
Blue Buffalo is a 4 star food, so pretty good. 100x better than Science Diet. The protein is a little higher than some foods, at 26%, but nothing at all like Innova Evo, which is over 40%. Have you actually transitioned to BB yet? If not, try. In general, a lot of vets don't know a whole lot about nutrition.
I encourage you to try the BB, make sure you switch to it slowly, and if it doesn't work, check out the website I mentioned for some other options.

This was where I checked to get some ideas of what I wanted to switch to. We are in the process of switching to the BB now. We'll give it a try, and see how it goes. I guess if it doesn't work we'll be switching again! (I REALLY hope we wont have to switch again. Lol)
Our mutt's been getting Blue Buffalo for the last couple years. It does not seem to cause diarrhea in him. He's a 25 lb German Spitz, not as small as your's but not a big dog either.
The one thing we did do was we stopped giving him table scraps when we transitioned him onto it. Blue Buffalo, along with leftover protein did seem to cause him some problems. He's not happy about this loss, but he wasn't the one who was picking up the goo!
