Sounds like W30 helped you pinpoint some issues that will help you in the long run!
I also didn't make it to the finish line. I ate Panera on Sunday which was my day 29. I did make healthier choices than I usually do and continued to eat Paleo Mon and today which is the long term plan.
What seems to be the problem, IYO? Is it something I can help you with?
Laziness? I don't know. I think I've had a hard time finding my real motivation (mainly weight loss and constant tiredness, but being tired makes me lose motivation) and a fear that if I DO figure out that something in my diet is making me so tired, that I just won't have the willpower to give it up long-term and then I'll have no one to blame but myself for my constant exhaustion.
Well, and the first time I got a stomach flu and said "F this." The second time I was going strong and then prepped two days worth of stir fry/cauliflower fried rice only to realize that both I, and Whole Foods were out of Coconut Aminos and I sort of had a temper tantrum and used soy sauce. After that I felt like I'd screwed up and didn't have the drive to start over from Day 1, so I scrapped it until now.
I'm feeling a lot more prepared and motivated this time, though. I've mastered making almond milk and actually like it with espresso (giving up lattes was a big hurdle for me after sleepless toddler nights) and I've already filled the freezer with compliant meals. So, if ever there was a time, this is it. I have no excuses this time, I even posted my plan on Facebook and told a bunch of friends so I'm hoping that going public will help me stay strong.
A few thoughts:
1. The stomach flu thing was absolutely not your fault and a completely legitimate reason to stop. Don't beat yourself up for that one at all.
2. If you do find something that is causing your issues and you start to feel better, I promise that willpower will not be an issue. When I realized wheat had cost me the last three years of my life being covered in hives, I was PISSED, not distraught. Also, there are alternative for just about everything and I promise, you will adjust.
3. Do you have a copy of Well Fed? She has a really good section called "The Weekly Cookup" that I think would really help you. She takes you step by step through how to cook the vast majority of your food in one day. And then she shows you how to adjust those foods when you're ready to eat so that you're not eating the same thing day in and day out. It's really magical.
My first week was hell. I reccomend you just eat whatever you want whenever you want as long as it is compliant. Even if it is bacon and bananas all day. After you survive the first week you can start making sure you eat appropriately at each meal.
I know purists will not approve but I have 2 whole30s under my belt and the only thing that got me through the first week was eating a lot. As long as it was compliant I forgave myself. By week 2 I was able to regulate better.
Good luck.
Ps. I know weight loss isn't the goal but I manage to lose 10 lbs plus each time. Even with the crazy first week.
I broke it for the Super Bowl too. It was so hard to get motivated again once I did. But after I got through a few days of Whole 30 foods again. I found my motivation.
I'm guessing you're doing this solo? That for me would have been really hard. So I don't blame you for having trouble. But you can do this!! Have you tried coconut milk in your coffee? I used to do almond milk, but I really find that I actually like coconut milk better.
