A 10-year-old boy has been arrested and two other young boys were being sought in a home invasion robbery during which a woman was beaten and had a potted plant thrown into her face in the Juniata Park section, police said.
The other boys are said to be 7 years old and 12 years old.
Police responding to a call of a person screaming about 5:50 p.m. Monday found the 50-year-old victim on the 1200 block of Luzerne Street.
She told police she was sleeping in her room in the rear of the residence when the boys entered and started beating her with sticks, rocks and a rope.
When she got out of the bed, one of the boys threw a potted plant in her face, police said. The intruders ransacked the room and fled with a purse containing $20.
The woman suffered cuts to the nose and lips, bruising to her legs, and pain in her chest and head, police said.
The 10-year-old, reportedly a neighbor of the victim, has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, theft, possessing an instrument of crime, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. His name has not been released because he is a juvenile.
Gangs recruit in elementary school now. Its scary.
It's true. The district-wide pre-planning meetings here tell teachers at every level how to look out for gang activity and recruitment. It's horrifying.
I'm going to take a wild guess that these children are not from stable, two-parent households.
^ not stereotyping.
Yep, there's zero correlation or connection between youths and children who engage in violent criminal acts and the stability of their family. It's a totally unfounded stereotype.
Damn. I was thinking it seemed ridiculous that M's kindergarten dress code includes language about the uniform clothing not being any way related to gang affiliations. It even requires your top contrast clearly with your bottom. You can wear a sweater that matches your pants but the shirt underneath must clearly contrast. So no black shirts/black pants, etc.

Given the area of the city that this occurred in, I snorted when I read all this. Since it's a pretty spot-on observation.
