DH and I headed to Mexico next week and it will be my first time away from DS for a night. DS is 22 months and will be with his grandma for 5 days 4 nights. We've never left him with anyone but the two of us overnight.
We're stoked for this vacation! We really need one. But of course I'm a little wary of leaving DS for the first time.
How did your first kid-free vacation go? Was it everything you dreamed of?
How often did you call?
Anybody have any recommendations for how to stay in touch while we're in Mexico? Calling card?
We won't have a computer so skype is not possible.
We went to Costa Rica without DS1 when he was 22 months old. I think we were gone 5 nights. He stayed with my parents and had a great time, as did we. We emailed pretty much daily, and we talked several times, though I can't remember how?
We have not taken a kid-free vacation since DS2 was born, but we are planning to do so in July or August. DS1 will be almost 5, and DS2 will be be 27/28 months. I think they will do great with my parents.
First kid free trip was a weekend away for our anniversary. DS1 was ten months and still nursing so it kind of sucked because I had to pump the whole time. My mom stayed with DS, he did fine and drank milk from my freezer stash.
We went on a five night trip to grand Cayman when ds1 was about 17 months. He was done nursing by then. My mom and mil took turns staying with him and he did fine that time too.
I am more nervous to take a kid free trip now that we have two because I think it will be a lot more for one of our moms to handle. We are thinking of going away for our anniversary next year as our next kid free trip, so the boys will be almost 4 and 2 and a half.
We were able to use the land line in our grand Cayman condo for calls, so we made short calls home every night. We also had wifi so we sent emails to our moms.

Where are you staying in PV? I've been there a ton of times (parents had a timeshare) and twice with DH. It was actually OUR first kid-free vacation too.
If your hotel doesn't offer free calling back to the US, check with your cell carrier to see if you can add coverage to/from Mexico just for the month of your travel. Our friends did this and it was only $7 for the month, well worth being able to check in with home each day.

We are planning this when DS is 2 years old or so, and I can't wait! Just remember to get your parents power of attorney in case your son needs medical care. We are also going to do a will so that it's spelled out who would raise DS in the event of our deaths.
We went on our first kid free vacation for one weekend. I was really ready to see her after a day. I think she was about 9 months old. She was with my aunt. Then when she was around a year and a half, we left her with my parents when we went on a cruise. It was awesome. I felt like I was in my 20s again (I was 29). And by day 5, I was making eyes at every baby on the cruise, but I really was happy that we didnt' bring her. No phones, no e-mails.

We're actually staying at a all-inclusive in Nuevo Vallarta north of Puerto Vallarta. It's for a friend's wedding.
I've never even been to Mexico before! I hope it's nice. Looking at the pictures, it looks amazing! Thanks for the tip about the cell carrier. I'll have to look into that.
