I have finally succeeded in training my hair to be washed every 2-3 days (yay!). However, I still SUCK at styling it. Attached is how it looks today. Thank goodness the only other professor around is an old man in elastic waist jeans! LOL.
On days that I wash it, I use a sea salt spray before blow drying. That seems to help it be less limp. On days that I don't wash, I literally roll out of bed and brush my hair.
What should I be doing? My stylist mentioned using big velcro rollers to add body. Do any of you use these? What are the best kind to get? Do you put them in wet hair?
What other products should I be using? I don't feel like my hair is greasy, just really limp.
My hair basically looks the same as yours but I think mine looks ok, LOL.
My hair is fine and straight. It doesn't do much. For me, it is a waste of time to get it to "do" something b/c it falls flat or comes undone within a few hours (sometimes minutes) anyway. I'd rather sleep the extra 10-15 minutes, kwim?
That said, I have velcro rollers (I got 4 big and 8 medium for a dollar each pack - the big ones were 2 per pack, medium were 4 per pack - from the Target dollar bins) but rarely use them due to timing. I put them in dry hair and blow dry over them til warm, then cool, then remove. But still, my hair falls flat not long after. I don't like the way my hair feels with product in it (I try to avoid dry shampoo even but if I am running late and can't wash/dry my hair and make it to work on time I will use it 1x per week or so) so I don't do gel, mousse or hair spray.
Can you spiral curl your hair with a fat curling iron - with hair your length it would look great with beachy waves. have you tried the "no heat curls"?

Like PP, my hair is really fine and doesn't hold curl well at all. I should at least give this a try, though.
Does anyone have recommendations for products to make fine hair hold a curl better?
I have been tempted to cut my hair to shoulder length like the picture below, but I like the versatility of longer hair, so I think I'm going to hold off.
If I pin curl or use sponge rollers at night my curls stay a lot better.
OMG sponge rollers make me think of kindergarten. My mom used to put them in my hair every night.
What is pin curling?
When I google "no heat curls" I get descriptions of wrapping pieces of hair around a headband and sleeping on it. Is this what you're talking about, ijack? Have any of you done this?
Yes, it's wrapping your hair around a headband and sleeping on it. Try it on a weekend first to practice. Depending on your hair you might want to spritz it with water or hairspray first. I love the way it looks when my hair is long and it's super easy (don't mind my double chin)

Pin curling is making curls with your hands and pinning them.
Ditto just about everything Mrs.Spunky said. I actually got a hair cut at a school yesterday and she spent forever blowing out my hair only to have it fall out completely 20 mins after I left. It actually started disappearing while she was blowing out the next section. I might try some of the methods mentioned here like the pincurls, etc but I just wanted to pop in and pass along the advice she gave me about hairstyles. Nothing too short or you hair will look thinner. I went with a medium (little longer than shoulder length) round layered cut. Layers will help add volume. I also find that when I grow my hair out too long it tends to get too heavy and that makes it look lanky and limp, almost like you mentioned. She also mentioned using rollers near to root to add volume and using a thickening cream product.
My hair is shorter and not nearly as thick, but I LOVE my velcro rollers. They give a nice amount of body and are really easy. I blow dry my hair to where my hair is just damp. Then I roll my hair in velcro, hold my blow dryer on hot close to each curler for 15 seconds each, spray my head with hair spray, then I go do my makeup while my hair cools off. Once I'm done with my makeup (which is only about 5 minutes), I take the rollers out and shake my hair out with my fingers.
Here's the only picture I could find.
They are easy and cheap, so they are definitely worth trying.
