You're absolutely right. 70-80k liquid is one Super Sized Big Mac away from homelessness
You can squeak by on that. 50k is just plain irresponsible and thats whats wrong with the world today. All these poor people who thjnk they can have kids and cant even afford the basic pbk bacpack. (Im a lttle sensitive today)
Don't forget about the Erin Condren planner. How will we ever survive without the $50 stickers??
Maybe. Maybe not. I'm sure it varies from poster to poster.
What I can say, though, is that such comments drive those with higher incomes away from ever sharing their budgets, which I think is sort of a shame because I'd love to see how people are spending their gobs of money.
i know. i'm just irritable today.
ETA: and i get all mamabear when people here say things like "i'll never have that much in savings" and someone follows up with "people who have kids who aren't financially responsible make the baby jesus cry and america into a weak shadow of its former self." leave my friends alone!

I agree with this. We're not in the 5 digit take home but I like seeing the budgets of those that are.
And I can definitely see wanted to adjust your budget for kids. Daycare for an infant is $2k/mo and an older kid $1200-1500/mo. That's a sum we would require some serious financial planning for.

I find it fascinating as well, but I call BS on the "I need to make sure we make enough for baby."
Maybe it's just because my budget is pretty bare bones, but I don't really understand why you need someone else to tell you how and where to find an extra $2k. Can't a person look at their own budget and figure that out? I can see needing help when it comes to investments, but not budgeting for things like child care, diapers, formula.. all that seems pretty straightforward. Even adding in a college savings account seems simple enough.
I think a lot of it is asking for the best way to find the money. I'm a financial idiot and would want advice for where to cut back. Cutting cable isn't going to get me the $2300/mo for a nanny. So it's a question of lowering retirement, or cutting into the efund, or combination of each. Things like that.
