I know flats aren't that dressy, but some seem more casual than others. I love the brown coach heels that y'all helped me pick. Any suggestions for black flats to go with editor pants, a shell and cardigan (aka what I wear 80% of the time)?
I too agree that patent is fancier. I have a pair of Franco Sarto black suede and patent flats that work with black pants, but I got them 4 years ago at Marshalls so I doubt they are around now. They do look similar to these Anne Klein shoes at Zappos: Leather Anne Klein shoe

I think a structured, point-toe is more polished. It can be leather, suede, or patent. A soft, round-toed shoe, that curls up when not on your foot, is very casual to me.

I own a brown and black pair of Marc Joseph New York Cypress Hill Driver Mocs. They are the most comfortable flat I have ever worn. Totally worth the price. They look great under dress pants.

I think the shape of the shoe makes a big impact.
I think of round toes, like you posted, as very casual. I find pointed toes more elegant (it's a personal thing).
To me, the shape of these ones (image below) is ideal. They look slim and elegant. The taper is perfect, neither too long nor too abrupt. It's shaped like a classic pump minus the heel. There's nothing frumpy or cheap looking about them, so I'd try to duplicate them in an affordable price range.
