We just did this last week. She is 16 months. The 2nd day she asked me, "where paci go?" I told her it was gone and she has not asked for it since. It took her a little longer to go to sleep the first few nights, but now she goes right to sleep.

We snipped the ends, and we also did the Goobie Fairy (we call pacifiers goobies). The Goobie Fairy was a huge hit, and still talks about it over a year later. It went so well, we even had a potty fairy when he potty trained.
For the Goobie Fairy, I told him that the Goobie Fairy would come and bring him a wonderful surprise when he was ready to give up his goobies. He heard "surprise" and wanted to do it right then. We packed them all in a box, and put them in the mailbox. A little while later, the Goobie Fairy came and left him a couple little cars (which he's really into).
That night he cried for a minute or two, but we reminded him that he traded up for those awesome cars. He wasn't willing to give the cars back to the Goobie Fairy.

Cambria was never into it, but Keira was obsessed. She was almost 4 when I was finally able to wrestle it from her mouth. She would still like to use one if I let her. It was rough.
Evelyn was hooked on those binkies!! At her 2 mo. checkup, the Dr. told us her teeth were starting to form funky so we cut her off cold turkey. I remember thinking it was going to be a complete nightmare, but now that she is almost 6 - i have to say, I don't remember it being an issue at all! LOL!!
I think it really only took a few days and that was that. Just make sure you really throw them ALL out. No 'back ups"
DS2 was about the same age when we took his away. One night, I just told him I couldn't find it. And then I felt horribly guilty as he proceeded to look all around his room for it. The next day I fessed up and told him that I took it b/c he's a big boy now and big boys don't use binkies. He took it pretty well...never even cried about it or anything (which completely shocked me). A few times since, he's asked me about it and told me he missed it, but accepts my explanation about big boys not needing them. For us, it was a much smoother transition than I thought it would be!
2 months ago I lost all of Sofia's "su-su's" and I managed to put her to sleep just fine. Apparently she found another one somewhere and the second time around has been much more difficult. I want those fuckers gone. I hate forever searching for them. I thought I was in the clear too because she wouldn't even look at one until she was around 6 months old. After that, they became crack to her.
If it helps at all I think cold turkey is often the best way to go with these things -- even if it worked out unintentionally. I hope you find those pacifiers!!
We still have ours. She calls it her two-tee. I am dreading taking it away. I tried once and it was pure hell on earth. I will probably do the snip the end thing.

We lucked out. G loved his pacis, but when he had some tough teething at 1 y.o., he decided he didn't want them because his mouth hurt. I put them away. He asked for them a week or so later, but they were gone.

one of my friends did the "poke a hole in it" thing so that her daughter couldn't really suck on it, and it didn't go well. Then i bought her these cute butterfly sippy cups with straws and she became obsessed with sucking water out of the straw and hasn't asked for the pacifier again. so straw sippy cups are my advice!

Santa came and took all of Kristen's when she was 3. Bastard. She cried that night, and was pissy the next, then that was it. Cami gave up hers by herself a week ago. *angel choir*
