I'm getting spoiled by the cold weather and forced treadmill runs for HM training; my water just rests nearby and I can grab a sip any time I want. But I'm hoping to get outside more in the next few weeks, especially for the weekend long run; right now I'm at 7.5 miles. What are your recommendations for carrying water, water belts, or pouches? Will I look like an idiot showing up at a HM race wearing a Camelbak? Does the extra weight bother you?
I don't generally carry water for races. I just drink what's on the course.
For training I prefer to plan a route with lots of bubblers but if that's not an option (or the bubblers are off) I like my amphipod thermal lite handhelds. I have a 12 oz and a 20 oz. I use the 12 oz most of the time but if I'm marathon training in the summer I'll use the 20 a couple times per week.

You should try out a few options to see what works best for you. I, for example, haaaaate handhelds. I've tried some of the lower profile ones even, and I just can't stand them. I wear a 2 bottle fuel belt. But some people are exactly the opposite. You can usually find inexpensive options at TJMaxx or Marshalls, so you can try a few things out.
I prefer handheld water bottles. I have a 10 oz Nathan and a 20oz insulated ultimate direction (although there is a camelback water bottle in there now) A lot of times I just run loops so I don't have to carry anything.
There are so many options, so I'd recommend just seeing what works for you! I got a lightweight hydration vest for Christmas, and focus more on trail running (i.e., not a lot of opportunity to refill), so I wear that for my long runs. I have a half in a few weeks, and do wonder if I'll get funny looks for wearing it!
I prefer to carry water even during races, because then I have a place to stash my phone and fuel too.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
I hate, hate, hate handhelds, and prefer a belt. So obviously everybody has their preferences! I don't think I'd enjoy a Camelbak either, I think it would either bounce or hang on my back and feel hot.

I'm a Nathan fuel belt lover. I usually carry water for 10 miles and up. Plenty of people will be carrying fuel/water in various apparatuses (sp) for a half no reason to be embarrassed.

Where are you originally from?
Wisconsin.
I'd usually make a point to call them drinking fountains instead but I'm on my phone and bubbler is shorter.
There are two places in the known universe that accept the term "bubbler" as an apparatus that dispenses water for consumption. Wisconsin (from which ebeth hails) and Rhode Island (my home state). Rhode Islanders tend to pronounce it "bubblah" though
LOL. Yes, I figured it was very geographically specific. The interwebs also tell me it is acceptable in Australia, but I know Australian, she is not.

And Massachusetts we call them bubblahs :-P
I usually run with my fuel belt. I bought a two bottle and added a third one and will probably add a fourth one on this summer. I also have a handheld that I will take if I am running short in my neighborhood and it is really warm out.
Thanks everyone! Nice to learn gear and dialects at the same time
Haha. Sorry, I didn't mean to derail your thread. To answer the OP, I plan my routes where I will pass several water fountains (AKA: Southern bubblers)
I don't ever race with water but I do typically run with water for runs over 8 miles and sometimes shorter when it's really hot. I have a 20 oz Nathan handheld and a Nathan belt that has 4-10 oz bottles. I use that for my 18-22 milers.
I have a Fuelbelt that didn't come with water bottles so I purchased some on Amazon (same brand). I tried it out this morning. It was a little annoying at first but then either I didn't notice the bottle bouncing or drinking a bit out of it made it less bouncy. At first I thought I was going to have to look into handhelds but then after a few minutes on my run I didn't even notice the water bottle on me.
