Oh, speaking of meat. This totally doesn't belong in FFFC but I don't give a shit. We had our first "incident" regarding meat yesterday. We do co-op snow days with 3 other families, meaning that if daycare is closed, all the kids go to one house, one other family helps care for them, and two families get to work as usual. Well, at lunch the kids all had chicken. Kai got very upset that he couldn't have chicken. (I wasn't there but DH was). It's the first time he's really noticed or cared about the whole meat thing. So when we got home we explained that chicken is an animal, and we love animals so we don't eat them, but some people do. Then he was like, how do you eat an animal? So we said, you have to kill it first. Then he said, why do my friends eat animals? Anyway, it was I'm sure the first of many difficult conversations about it. I don't want him to judge his little friends for eating meat, but I do want him to know explicitly why we don't. I also don't want him to eat meat just to defy us, which I'm sure he will at some point, lol.
This is a completely non-judgmental question, please know that. I've always been curious about situations like this.
At what age would you find it "acceptable " for him to decide he wants to eat meat, if ever?Â
I don't know! I want to be sure he's old enough to fully comprehend what it means to kill and eat an animal. My family raises animals for meat so we may have him watch a chicken slaughter or something. If he's too young to watch that then he's too young to eat it IMO. But I don't know when I'll feel ready for that. DH thinks 5. I think that's still a little young.
The thing is, I don't think it's wrong to eat animals. It's more complicated than that. And although it's hard to explain nuances to a small kid, I don't want to just say "we think it's wrong to eat animals." IDK it's a tough one.
We don't have any grown up glassware. My husband collects pint glasses from different breweries and we use those. Just one of many ways in which I don't feel like an adult yet.
we used to and they are almost all broken, so now we use mason jars of different sizes
I feel like your explanation implied that people who eat meat don't love animals jfh
Yeah, I think so too. That's why I think the suggestion of food chain/omnivores/choice is pretty non judgemental. Like our bodies are made to eat animals AND plants. But we have ways now to get all the healthy stuff from just plants. So that's what our family picked. Then close with "what do you think about that...." to keep him involved in your family's choices.

ANd to clarify, at 2 years old, I think it's OK to pick a vegetarian diet for him. If he says he wants to try meat you can say something like "Well, I get that, buddy. But we'll talk about that when you're a bit older. Right now our family has chosen to just eat plants and {whatever else}". But we can talk about it as much as you want.

Our friends who are vegan definitely struggle with this. When they are at something with meat the kids will sneakily eat meat.
The mom told them that to eat chickens, the chickens can't be alive any more and we want chickens to syay alive instead
It's tough because it's hard to explain .. Because the chicken they want to eat is already dead because it's right in front of them.
I assume the best bet at this age is to just minimize meat appearances close to him as much as possible. I just feel like at 2,3,4 they probably aren't really going to "get" it so I'd probably just treat it like other things they can't have like beer, coffee etc.

I know, it's a fine line. It's disingenuous to just say "we choose not to eat meat" without an explanation. We choose not to because we love animals and don't want them to suffer. I don't know how else to honestly explain it to him - but I agree that plenty of people love animals like dogs and cats, but eat animals like pigs and chickens. I don't know how to explain that to him.

The tough thing with this is that his friends aren't drinking beer and coffee. Anyway, we knew this was coming, just hoped it would be a little longer.

Yeah, that's a harder connection to make.
But, again, I think focusing on what you DO eat is the best thing at age 2.

Ah yes the going out in public clothing debate! I use the term sweats to mean anything other than jeans or dress pants.
I have VS Pink sweats that I wear around the house, but I won't go to the store in them. I have nice yoga pants and will go to the store in them. If I am coming/going from the gym, I will be in workout clothes at Target.
I just can't sit around after work or after the kids go to bed on my couch in jeans. The first thing I do when I get home is shed the restrictive clothing. I honetly can not fathom being in jeans from 5:30 am to 10 pm if I am just at home. WHY???
Weekends I mostly wear leggings in the winter with tunics or sweaters.
H says almost all his students wear sweats (boys) or leggings (Girls) to school.

Yes true but of his friends were drinking soda or juice you might say no to that too? I mean I often tell matilda she has to have water even if her friend/cousin is getting juice or milk ...
I hate sweats. They make me hot. I love yoga pants though and I also don't have much tie to work out so I lovethe ability to actually just stop at random moments during the day and do 5 min of yoga. I can't do that with jeans on. I wear jeans most days though. Also I'm glad I live in ca bc I really wear skirts 3/4 of the year.
I love our sleeping situation. May goes to sleep n her own room so we have the bed to ourselves half the night and then motn she calls me and I bring her to bed with us and we get to snuggle. She is warm and sweet and doesn't squirm. My flame full is dh wants her out when the baby comes since it will also be in bed but secretly I think he should go sleep on the couch so I can snuggle with my babies. It's not like there will be sex for 6 wks anyway.
I think it's less of " people love animals like dogs and cats and eat animals like chickens and pigs" and more of a different mind set. Most of my family lives on or grew up on farms. My mom often talks about caring for the pigs, playing with them and loving them despite being their for slaughter to cure ham for winter. Just because you eat an animal doesn't mean you don't have compassion for it, love it and are grateful.

FWIW I also grew up on a farm caring for the animals that were later slaughtered.
I don't even like co-sleeping with my husband, much less a pack of wiggly, hot, squirmy kids. My preferred sleeping situation would be a room all by myself with completely sound proofed walls.

I'm just pointing out that it's a different mindset either way. That statement seemed to insinuate only dogs and cats are cared for. I felt the need to clarify that most omnivores are grateful for the life of the animal's life that they are eating and do have compassion for it's life.

Yes. And a fan. And open windows In winter/ a/c set on 62 in summer.

I think there is a lot of denial regarding how the vast majority of commercially produced animals are raised and killed.

I don't own any yoga pants. No particular reason, I just don't. I wear pj pants when I'm lounging around the house. And I'm talking loud obnoxious Minnie Mouse, brightly polka dotted, and fuzzy pink stars kinda pj pants, so no chance of me feeling comfortable enough to wear them to the store.
Although I will admit to going to the donut store and eating inside while wearing pjs on several occasions. Haha.
Anyways I generally throw on jeans and a shirt or leggings (with my butt completely covered ) if I'm leave the house. But I have no judgement for those who do otherwise. I think yoga pants and non see-through leggings are just as appropriate for public outings.

fadedscars, by doing that you are "bothering" someone else because you are hurting someone they love and care about. Please go to a professional that can help you. We will help you if you need it.

Yeah, but I think it's unfair to tell a two year old that thier two year old friends don't love chickens since they eat chickens. Remember that it's not up to those two year olds. It's up to their parents. And K may learn to pass judgement on his peers and that's not fair.

I feel like the meat/veg thing is kind of like the religion/athiesm thing. You guys know I have strong feelings, but my kids aren't old enough to talk about such things. So I do a lot of "what do you think" "this is what I think". Maybe not with A, but with E. We have so many talks. She is cool.

I wear jeggings or leggings everyday. And I am a plus plus size girl. Breaking all the rules. I do make sure my ass is covered though. I do the bum check everyday before leaving the house. I really don't give two fucks anymore about what people think. I always leave the house with makeup on and my hair done. That's just my choice.
I did judge the middle aged woman in starbucks a couple of weeks ago in her workout pants. Want to know why? The whole back of them were mesh. To her butt cheeks. You don't go to starbucks with your ass hanging out people! I don't care how good of shape you are in! Sheesh.
