Traveling with pets

Hi - I don't post over here often but have a question about traveling with pets.

I'm taking a trip for two weeks to visit my husband who is working in another state. I was thinking of bringing our cat along instead of boarding him. I intend to bring him on board in the cabin with me. Has anyone done this - has any tips about it? Is this all around a bad idea? He's a pretty relaxed cat - loves people and is all around pretty low key. I don't really know what to expect. I know I need to have him fully vaccinated beforehand and essentially buy him a ticket, but that's about it. Not sure what I need to do to get through security easily, keep him relaxed, etc. If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.
