You guys, I'm about to give up. My marathon is in 3 weeks. Last Saturday evening, my foot started to hurt, pretty much out of the blue, although I did 20 miles that day. I kept running on it all week because this was to be my peak week. From the start this morning, I was in terrible pain. I could only make it 16 miles. I had planned 22. I made it by pretty much running on my left toes because I can't put weight on the back of my foot, but that was starting to throw everything else off.
Sigh. I'm trying to ice it, but it keeps growing and it's starting to discolor. It's definitely more my ankle than my peroneal tendon- it's right under my ankle bone, which you can no longer see. I may be heading out to Urgent Care in a bit if it gets worse.
Honestly, how much more time can I lose? (That's sort of a rhetorical question, but feel free to answer it.)
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
I'm so sorry! I hope you get some answers and it feels better soon. I do think if you can get it healed, the 20 miler 4 weeks out would be sufficient mileage wise, but I know that doesn't mean much when you are in pain. Crossing my fingers for you.
I am hurting for you just reading that. I am SO sorry.
I think the number one thing now is rest and trying to promote healing. cinco is totally right that you've already done sufficient mileage & training to complete the marathon. You just need to see if you can get some answers for the pain. I really hope you can get healthy enough to still start the marathon. Right now, just RICE.
You've done the hard work, rest up and get better. I'd probably just go to urgent care and have them look at it. The mental anguish of this is probably far worse than any damage it will do your to training.
Oh no! Hopefully it's nothing too serious and clears up soon. Agree the 20 miler should be sufficient. My last long run was 6 weeks before my marathon and it was ok. Rest up!
You can lose time and still complete the race....what you cannot do, is start a marathon where even the first step puts you in terrible pain. I know it sucks. Most of us have been there, but you need to stop. The 16 miles today is crazy. (And this is coming from a very stubborn runner.) Please go get it looked at. I'm sorry.
Ack I am hurting for you. Huge hugs. Your training is there, but even the perfect training cycle can't compensate for pain. Rest up, see what can be done about it, and don't get down on yourself. Sending you healing wishes!
Ugh that sucks. I would definitely just rest. Give it at least 1.5 weeks and then see how your foot feels. It sounds like you've done great with your training so that should take you far. Hope it heals up.
How are you today shellfish26? Did you decide to go to urgent care? Either way I hope you've at least got the pain under control today. And I hope you are resting!

Thank you all for the thoughts and wisdom. Being a first-timer, I truly appreciate everyone's thoughts- because I know if anyone is in a position to give sound advice, it's the H&Fers. And yes, clseale, you are totally right- in hindsight, I regret going through with the run. I hoped it would just work itself out, but by mile 8, I finally realized that it wasn't going to get better. And of course, at that point, there was no easy way home. I could have walked it, but it would have taken hours.
Things are about the same today. It kept me awake for most of the night, so I had planned to go to UC this afternoon. Except now, we're having a crazy ice storm and I am a bit anxious driving there. So I'll re-evaluate tomorrow, and call my doctor. In the meantime, I am snuggled up on the couch with the cats and a drink. I feel like such a grouch because my cats are total lap cats and I just can't get comfortable with them on me, so i keep shooing them away!

Oooh....good news! I swear, this has been SUCH a roller coaster! Is this what happens to everyone? Because if so, I don't know if I'm cut out for this whole marathon thing, lol.
Anyway, the official word is bursitis. I've spent the week resting it, icing it, popping Aleve, and violating the work dress code with my comfy shoes. With the blessing of my PT, I decided that I would see how it felt when I woke up this morning to decide whether or not I was going to try the 14 we had planned. Woke up with no pain, and my awesome running buddies mapped out a route with lots of ways to turn back. But in the end it went really well, and I had no pain until the last mile, but it was more tightness than the sharp pain from last week. But I iced it while sitting at Whole Foods having breakfast and by the time I was done, the pain was gone.
I'm definitely taking it super easy next week, but my training plan has a max mileage of maybe 18, so missing a few runs is NBD. Keeping everything crossed that I'll be ready to go in 2 weeks. Eek.

First, yay!!!! Second, yes, this is exactly what happens.
